A whole generation remembers him for one of the most famous lines in space history:
"Ah, Houston, we’ve had a problem."

Jim Lovell wasn’t originally scheduled to command Apollo 13 - he was a Plan B, stepping in through a chain of coincidences. Yet it was under his calm and steady leadership that the crew faced one of NASA’s most dramatic challenges and returned home safely.

Years later, no less than Tom Hanks would portray Lovell in the blockbuster Apollo 13. Jim himself worked with the film crew and even had a cameo appearance - something he remained quietly proud of.

Over his career, Lovell set a number of remarkable records:

* First person to travel to space four times
* First flight to the Moon (Apollo 8, with Frank Borman and William Anders)
* Together with Jack Swigert and Fred Haise on Apollo 13, the farthest distance any human has been from Earth
* 1965–1970, longest spaceflight record with Frank Borman (Gemini 7)
* 1965–1973, longest total time in space, including the Gemini years with Borman
* First human to fly to the Moon twice (Apollo 8 and Apollo 13), and still the only one to do so without landing

Jim Lovell lived to the age of 97th.

Godspeed, Jim. You brought the stars a little closer to me.

Certainly there are people who stand out from the rest, for whatever reason, and their merit should be recognized. But we should never forget that most of the time there is an anonymous team behind them—without whom they wouldn't have been able to get to the Moon, or even to the next town. Let's remember Lovell as the public face of the success, but without forgetting the rest of the anonymous heroes.
