For the first season with your team, your draft picks are playing for a ridiculously low wage, but as I learned the hard way at the end of last season, when it comes time to renegotiate, they've had a full year of skill-building, and they become even more expensive to sign...
So I'm wondering if the veterans have any insight into when is the perfect time to renegotiate. Doing it now seems like a complete waste of the discounted wage, but is that offset by being able to lock in the renegotiated wage for 2+ seasons? |

my 1st round pick this season accepted a salary lower than the one he came with ... so this was a no-brainer
you could always try to train his 2nd higher skill to keep the salary not too high and renegotiate at the end of the season or just give him a new contract now |

The skills won't raise that much in just one season. If I take my new safety as an example. Current wage is 4,100. If I were to renegotiate now it would be 6,200... I really doubt that by the end of the season that's going to push over 8,300, which it would have to in order to make it more viable to renegotiate now. Especially considering most of the things you'll be training initially are Physical condition, maxing out physicals etc. I'd say at a guess I'll be looking at about 7,000 max if I do it at the end of the season. So I'd say wait until as late as you can before doing it.

Allow me to use the numbers to illustrate my problem better:
1st Round Pick: Current: $2,525 Estimated: $7,984 Can renegotiate for: $7,250-7,500 2nd Round Pick: Current: $3,301 Estimated: $11,143 Can renegotiate for: $10,000-10,500 3rd Round Pick: Current: $4,269 Estimated: $5,626 Can renegotiate for: $5,150-5,250 My third-round pick can be done now, for sure. It's the other two I'm wondering about. |

If those players are your instant starters then sign them now, if not - don't train their highest skills till season end, then sign them. It's easy

Skills at around 30 are about 15k wage
Which is about the threashold at which I train skills - ie train primary skill to 30 then secondary to 30 etc. I would re-negotiate straight away although if you are looking to train say 4 or 5 skills evenly then there is case for waiting. Last edited on 2013-07-12 23:25:59 by mikemike778 |
