This topic has probably been widely covered but I couldn't find it sorry.

I've just got a team, am a Rookie manager in a level 2 league with a small stadium. So obviously building up the stadium is the 1st project.

However, I'd been looking to strengthen my squad. I bid on a 34 passing QB today who eventually sold for 3 million (I was hoping to pay less than 100k).

Should I stick with what I've got mostly for now?

One thing I've noticed is that I'm in quite a weak league and am currently top. This means unless I "suck for luck" from this point I'll not be getting much in the draft? Do basic QBs normally go for 3m? 34 passing isn't bad but that was the player's only stat that high and I was surprised when the bidding went above 500k.

Thanks.

Yes, stick with what you have now. You don't need to worry about passing until you get to 1.1. It should be easy for you to get some of your top choices in the draft since Dragons 2.1 has a lot of bots/players who aren't active. That QB's salary probably would have been too high for a new player anyway.

if you type in "rookie guide" there is a pdf the rookie area that gives a lot of help, also the following advice is very helpful. It was in response to a thread i started called "new manager".
the part below is from Lee1950.

Consider breaking your roster into three groups:

A) the future
B) the present
C) the past

A) I would definitely take the time to look at all my under 22yo (or thereabout) with 2.5+ *s and think about where I want them to be for the next 10 seasons. Those guys will be the core of your team.

B) 28+ yos can play where they can contribute immediately.

A) Highly talented 23-27yos

B) less than 3* 23-27yos

C) everyone you don't want (don't get rid of them yet!!)

Then look at your A) Group and let that influence your Coach-hiring approach. If you have a bunch of OL prospects in A), then be sure to hire an OL AC, for example.

Assign your B) guys to a positions that suit their current skills
Assign your A) guys to a position that best suits the team and their skills
Assign your C) guys to the leftover positions and look for cheap upgrades on the transfer list. 28+yos are pretty cheap usually. Set a limit and don't spend over it ($10k max per player, for instance).

After a few weeks go through your C) guys again, and if you still don't want them, start getting rid of them. I'd hold onto any high (30+?)Int/high Teamwork (30+) ones for a bit, though. High Teamwork means they will train up a bit quicker, and they might be useful later.

Good luck!

The only fault with that guide is that it considers talent to be an important factor....

Strength/Speed skill caps are much more important, as is TW

I agree.

Don't overestimate talent, as long as the skill set is of some use, keep any player that you have and try to find a spot for him.
