The EFLI is scheduled to play their first game in November. So, you may not have heard much about this league. I hope that changes, at least in terms of cable TV, a few bets, some news coverage. Brandon Chillar (LB , Packers) and Mike Ditka are investors.
Do people in India, Pakistan, and Bangladesh care about sports, or American football in general? It remains to be seen who enjoys this league. The players seem to be local recruits, not youth from USA. The EFLI needs to compete with local favorite cricket and international favorite soccer. I doubt I could see a game in November, but I do know my favorite team name is Kolkata Vipers. An experiemental friendly with Australians from the AFL revealed their American football talent as "physically fit, with the skills of a division III college team". How will the EFLI rank? |

I can't say for sure, but they may have a large debut audience, based on population alone. Ring Ka King, a pro wrestling organization which is owned and backed by TNA Wrestling in the US, debuted on Indian television in January to an audience of 14 million viewers. Conversely, the highest all time viewership for a WWE RAW broadcast in the US was just over 6 million viewers. While it may be comparing apples and oranges, the EFLI should draw a sizable audience, even if due only to curiosity. TomPhilipps70 wrote:The players seem to be local recruits, not youth from USA.
I like that. I think that the teams should have homegrown talent. At the very least, it shows the fans that people from their cites, towns, and villages can become pro athletes without having to bring in a ringer from the US or elsewhere. I'm not sure if the meaning is clear, but I hope you get my point. TomPhilipps70 wrote:The EFLI needs to compete with local favorite cricket and international favorite soccer.
That's not gonna happen, captain. Cricket is a sports juggernaut in India and not even the NFL has any chance of becoming more popular than soccer in most countries outside the US. I've learned that field hockey's also very popular in India, which is another hurdle for the EFLI. I don't know, but I'm willing to watch it. |

sounds good - hope it succeeds.
One question though, will the Sikh players have specially designed helmets to accomodate their turbans? Or will the turban be tied on top of the helmet? No disrespect intended at all, im just curious... |

I don't think anyone needs special helmets.
Interesting to see how the EFLI starts out , in an era when the pass-happy team is well known, not the blood and sand days of 1920s NFL. I hope to catch one game on youtube or television somewhere, but it seems unlikely. I hope to meet someone from India, Bangladesh, Pakistan or even those foreign workers who live in those nations (Filipino anyone?) .. Somebody tell me you saw a game and what it was like. And let's see if John Madden will visit and pronounce those names in India . It's not as easy as Rajesh. Last edited on 2013-04-04 04:23:03 by TomPhilipps70 |
