I made a post earlier with results from my scrimmages (205 passing plays)and a RB with blocking 9.4, and oop penalty made 85 successful blocks... Which is far, far too high.

At the moment you overvalue the successful blocks by a FB even if it is a oop RB.

We had the block discussion on TE and FB many times in the past. At the moment there is never a missed block by FB/TE. but there is no pancake too. The FB/TE lowers only the speed of the passrusher if he breaks through the OL (or the blitzing player).

This successful block by the FB doesnt say anything about the quality at the moment. The QB can still be sacked or in hurry if the FB doesnt lower the speed of the pass rusher enough.

example for it:

SC game

Ok it is vs a bot opponent but it is an example.

In 4th Qtr:

0:36 3 and 10 to go on own 24, David Rubeš (OC) snaps the ball to Helmut Tomeš (QB), Helmut Tomeš (QB) selected Jan Kaleta (WR/L) as target, Jeromy Petty (DE/R) breaks through the line, Lubomír Mlejnek (FB/R) blocks, Helmut Tomeš (QB) gets sacked by Jeromy Petty (DE/R), 9 yards for loss (Shotgun 4 WR vs. Dime 4DL MLB 4CB 2SF)

But in the stats Lubomír Mlejnek has only 2 successful blocks and no missed.

It was a successful CHIP block, not a pancake. So the FB just hit him, but didnt stop him. He probably bought the QB a little time, but not enough.

Looking back at scrimmages earlier this season I found 2 more where I was testing SG4WR. And again only 1 sack with the FB/RB getting a ton of blocks.

So in 5 games and ~350 pass plays with blitzing LBs (for 3 of the games) I got 2 sacks with my 'FB' making ~130 successful blocks... I know Norgard mentioned that term successful block should be taken lightly. But when I look at scrimmages played when I was using the I formation I'm seeing 3/4 sacks a game... With FBs getting less than 10 blocks a game overall.

Why is blitzing against I formation so much more effective than against SG4WR? And why is the FB performing his pass blocking duties much more effectively when his team lines up in SG4WR than the I?

(I'm using the I-form because I haven't really tested any other formations in scrimmages)

Its something I've noticed from league games too that most of my sacks are versus I-formation or Proset (which I understand as there is no FB).

edit: crap clicked edit, not reply so I lost my original message lol

It was something like: 'if that is the case, then surely a RB with 9.4 blocking shouldn't slow them down that much...... 1 sack in 3 scrimmages blah blah.... noticed same happening (can't get sacks) in offical games blah blah....

My DEs: spd/str >46, tck ~35, agl/vis/footwork ~25. Lead Seadevils 1.1 in sacks seasons 5&6

LBs pretty good too blah blah....'

Don´t miss blocking 0.0 is 75% of blocking 9.8 or better 10.0 is 80% blocking. The DE is slow down by the OL as well and after that a little bit more by the FB. Know you shouldn´t forget the QB skills to avoid sacks or pass before the passrusher is coming. maybe they don´t sack but the QB could be in hurry, at the moment we dont see it in the stats. So there can´t be a proven statement if it is no sack because of the blocking FB or the QB or the OL.

Maybe the receiver is so wide open that the QB can still pass even if the DE is tackling in this moment. In real life I saw it very often this season (best example is flacco in the playoffs)

Ok, thats a fair enough argument... But that still doesn't explain why is my FB picking up way more 'blocks' in the SG than the I-formation?

I'd really like to see a hurries stat actually, going to check if its been posted in the stats thread.

It is the fieldposition at the snap of your QB and FB.

In the SG the QB is 7 yrds behind the OL so there is even without a FB more time to pass or more way for the pass rusher to tackle the QB.

In the I-formation the QB is much closer to the OL so the distance for the passrusher/blitz is more less to sack the QB and the FB stays behind the QB instead of next to him on the right side.

Haha I knew something like that was going to come up, good answer. I still feel frequencies are a bit off. But don't have much more to say on the topic lol...

The other thing about the I is that the FB is set up to block for the run, not the pass, and it is probably often assumed that passing out of the I involves play-action. So you get the potency from that with the associated risk. That's the real life situation at least.
