The Friendly Cup match between the Ghost of Bautzen and Sheffield Wednesday unfolded at the picturesque venue of Fuyu, where no visiting fans watched as the home side aimed for victory, as experts had predicted. With the sponsorship from Wipe-Out Surf Insurance, both teams were set to give their all under the warm sun.
It all kicked off with a coin toss won by the Ghost of Bautzen, who decided to receive. Sheffield's kickoff was solid, resulting in a touchback that saw the Ghosts start their first possession on their own 20. Right off the bat, they aimed to establish their passing game, but it was met with adversity as their first pass by QB Fumio Matsukata fell incomplete.
As the first quarter progressed, the intensity heightened. The Ghosts managed to move the chains successfully with a series of first downs, highlighted by a 14-yard pass reception from Ichirou Kagabu. However, a crucial turnover on downs kept the score locked at zero. Then, Sheffield had their turn with the ball, but they struggled to find rhythm, unable to convert on key plays and resulting in several punts.
With the second quarter underway, the Ghost of Bautzen broke the deadlock with a touchdown driven by exceptional teamwork, culminating in a successful PAT. The score now read 7-0. However, Sheffield attempted to strike back. On their next possession, despite some promising plays, they could not cross the threshold into the end zone and ultimately settled for a field goal to bring the score to 7-3.
Late in the second quarter, the Ghosts found their stride once again, extending their lead with another touchdown, making it 14-3 at halftime.
