No worries, it's good to discuss such things and I appreciate you starting the thread - not least as it made me re-check my draft and shuffle a few players around before tomorrow

It sure can take a lot of time to do it manually and even then you can mess it up. My mid 1st round pick last season was a total howler and even today I have no idea why I had him listed so high!

You're formula is definitely a good way to get high skilled players that given time can be exceptional at nearly any position.

I just wanted to add a caveat if you will that if you use this formula and nothing else you'll end with a lot of LB, not a lot of OL and you could miss out on some great players, so it's worth casting a human eye over the results and adjusting to suit your taste.

PS I don't even hate you for being an Eagles fan #HTTR

Well, now you have to tell me what team you´re of. Dont think i hate a fangroup, only the teams and surtain players/coaches. Patriots/-G.O.A.T-/Belicheck tops that list since ´04.

Sorry, should have expanded that, standard hashtag for fans of Washington DC...
HTTR means "Hail To The Redskins"

Oh, ok. Well they´re 3rd on the NFC east hate list. So we´re good.

Hey Fummer,

Re the Excel examples you gave (in excel: (age-18)*-10) (in excel: (age-18)*-10) how do you apply this in Excel cause I didn't have a clue.

Do you apply Define Name on for example the Age column. If so how does it exactly work? Could you perhaps share an empty sheet but with the formulas?

Thanks,
RoelRodgers

Just replace "Age" by the cell where the player's age is. For example, if Age is in column A you need to type "=(A1-18)*-10" for player 1, then "=(A2-18)*-10" for player 2 and so on and so forth. You can simply copy down so you only have to type the formula once.

The copy down function is (in the version i use) in the bottom right corner of the cell with the formula.

Thanks guys, I feel stupid now as it's something I could have figured out myself. An example of over thinking something that is quite simple. I got there in the end by doing manual calculations so got my top 10 (I am only aiming for two positions this draft). Excited to find out who is my new top player!

My thoughts on both Meisthemans and Badkarmas draft settings is the same as some of the posts and advice i got when I started: A lot of player evaluation skills are required to do this, skills I didnt have when i started. It also sounds like it requires a lot of time, a thing i still dont have. It took me 2½ hour to do mine this season (of course i have tried it before, but still) most of it setting the right order after the calculation.

I tried doing a player by player evaluation in my 2nd or 3rd season, started with roughly 20 players, then went back and looked at them again a couple of days later and completely changed the order, did a few more only to stop for the day. A few days later i had to change it all again, before deciding i had to remove myself, the mood of the day and whatever else i would happen to look at THAT day from the process. My first formula had position of need bonuses, talent and top 3 skills included.

Basically, my hope with this thread, was to give new players a tool or starting point with their draft board setting, instead of giving up setting the board in dispear, like i did the first 2 drafts. And with that you have helped a lot with your posts, so on behalf of the ones finding this usefull, i thank you.

Even after 14 drafts I still change the order players are in up to the very last minute. I've just changed 5 or 6 guys in my draft right now... Some of it has to be based on hopes or gut feeling because we don't know the physical caps of draftees yet, it's hard to assume that all of them are red capped when we know it's not the case.

Anyway, there probably are as many draft ordering strategies as there are managers playing this game, this is part of the beauty of it, if there was a perfect formula to measure players the draft would be boring.

It was definitely helpful to me but I even added skills in my calculation based on the position I am drafting for.

Encouragingly the guy I had as no.1 stayed no.1 after I applied the calculations and guess what, I even got my no.1 guy on my Draft Board!

(of course immediate doubt set in when I considered the possibility that I picked really badly and that was the reason why I got him )

I scouted your guy. He looks very good. Depending on his caps (and what else you have), i think he is a safety or MLB (if high str. cap) untill you get a 50 int. guy.

A funny sidenote: i saw Badkarma picked up a smart LB.

I did. He was my no. 2.. pretty pleased as I picked at 27.
I actually reshuffled the draft on my spreadsheet using your formula up to my pick and guess who I would have got instead... the LB I listed on the previous page with sub 40 Strength and Speed. He's quite a gamble in my opinion with 11 of the players in my top 20 still left.
Maybe I'll get him tomorrow

I only look at the un-trainable stats plus xp, strength and speed. I ignore the rest as they can easily be trained up. For me, the most important stats are INT/TW/STR/SPE/XP. I see traits as a bonus and might boost a player a spot or two but not much.

I also don't put a lot of stock in Age, as even the oldest draftees will be on your team for a long time. I'll factor it in when it comes to players who will need a lot of training, but its not a factor for immediate staters or players who need only a little bit of work.
