I think it would be wrong to put 16 teams into a playoff system.
Beside the extra games taking their toll, those 16 teams will probably be filled with lots of 2 to 4 loss teams, It would kill the fun of the whole season.
It would make the regular season equal the NCAA basketball season, where all those contenders can play more or less good basketball, until it really counts, at March Madness.
I think 4 teams are a good addition.

While I think it's great that D-1 finally has a playoff system in place only 35 to 40 years after all of the other divisions in college football, I believe a 16-team playoff would be much better than 4. All 11 conference champions would qualify with 5 at-large bids awarded to teams which would be selected by a committee. The other conferences (Sun Belt, MAC, WAC, C-USA, MWC) as well as the indies not named Our Lady (Notre Dame) should get a shot at winning a championship. They may not have much of a chance, but neither do most of the teams in the BCS conferences. It would last only 4 weeks, and the championship game would be about the same point in January as the current schedule. Besides, a 12-team playoff hasn't hurt the NFL, has it?

As for college basketball, what kills the regular season is the conference tournament champs getting automatic bids to the Big Dance. The regular season champs should get the auto bid. That alone would add value to the regular season. It would certainly mean much more than it does now, which is to say, not much.

Sorry, but if the conference champs all have a shot, the first 2 rounds of a college Football playoff system would be boring as is could be.

You really want to see the SBC champ facing off against the PAC 12?
The MAC champ against the SEC champ?

All the big conferences were not able to crack the SEC dominance in almost a decade, what should the non-AQ conferences do?

Yes, from the competition point of view, those programs should at least have a chance, but it just creates worthless games.

And by the way, the WAC is dead for football.

I have to apologize for getting back after so long - real life intervened. I also know that we're just splitting hairs. Having written that, back to the matter at hand.

Yes.

Yes! Will it take a while for an upset to happen? Probably. Will I watch the games regardless of that fact? Definitely!

Keeping with our apples-to-oranges comparison of football to basketball, what draws a lot of attention to the NCAA basketball tournament is seeing a so-called mid-major knock off one of the big boys. VCU, Butler, George Mason, Richmond, Lehigh, Hampton, and FGCU were the talk of the tournament at one point or another. It has gotten to the point where we expect double-digit seeded teams to win early. Granted the big boys usually win in the end, but they had to win their way there.

jack6 wrote:All the big conferences were not able to crack the SEC dominance in almost a decade, what should the non-AQ conferences do?

Keep on keepin' on. Again, all it takes is one win.

There is also one other factor in that dominance that hasn't been discussed recently. Over-signing. While technically legal, it's sleazy. Players get released from their scholarships because...well, just because. Those players then get swept under a rug, never to be seen or heard from again. Now, football isn't the only college that sport that does that, and the SEC isn't the only conference that does it, but it seems to be most prevalent there. Having written that, Vanderbilt, Florida, and Georgia should be commended for not over-signing players. I've digressed, though.

I'll watch 'em.

Well, I can't argue that. Do yourself a favor and don't get old. The second thing to go is the memory and I forgot what the first thing is.

Honestly, I doubt there will be a 16 team playoff - - I think we're more likely to get 8 when they realize that four is inadequate.

It is difficult for me to see who else will compete with the elite teams of the SEC. I'm not sure Ohio State is really at that level. Perhaps the Oregon/Stanford winner might. Not sure about the Big-12 teams...
