There is a lot of talk about changing the name of the Washington Redskins. Apparently, this is not a new concern, and has been something that has gone on since the 60's.

What do you think?

I don't think there is any question that the NFL wants a franchise there one day, especially with them adding a third game next year.

Unfortuneatly the political pressure on the Redskins name change seems to be building and it now seems inevitable that will eventually happen but it will be a sad day for football not to have the Redskins.

London - ive been going to the NFL Wembley games since the first American bowl but i dont want a team in London. I just cant see it suceeding long term.
Would a team the quality of the Jaguars have 8 wembley sell outs a season? I dont think so.

From what ive read elsewhere NFL Uk tv viewers have grown by about 30 percent in the last 2 years and are now just behind tennis and motorsport (about equal 5th).
Thats great but the future of the sport here has got to be the growth of the domestic league and university game not the NFL.

Pretty much. Seems like no one has asked Native Americans about their view on the subject, and have taken offence on their behalf.

White guilt at its finest

To be fair they did try to ask the Native Americans their views - but it was a windy day so the smoke signals lost something in translation...

There is still a debate about whether it even originated as a derogatory name for Native Americans. Either way it is rarely used anymore. I've never heard anyone say it other than referring to the 1800's or for football. It may have been offensive 200 years ago, but I think it lost its bite. Pressuring the organization to change their name is completely absurd.

A friend of mine is pure Cherokee and the Redskins are his favorite team. He just calls them "The Indians".
