Football tiny step closer to Olympics
LAUSANNE, Switzerland (AP) - - Football took a tiny step closer to potential inclusion in the Olympics on Tuesday. The IOC's executive board granted provisional recognition to the international association that oversees the American brand of the sport. The International Federation of American Football (IFAF) had 64 member nations spanning six continents. USA Football governs the sport in the United States and is associated with the NFL. A vote on approving football for the Summer Games could take place as early as 2017, with the possibility of the sport joining the Olympics in 2024. IOC Sports Director Christophe Dubi praised football's federation for demonstrating 'strong youth appeal and making great progress in developing their sport around the world.' Very interesting. I love the idea, especially if there are 64 nations where american football is that popular. I know it is big in parts of Europe, but I'm surprised and happy to see the sport grow so much worldwide.
However, as an Olympic sport, I'd be worried about the Americans being too dominant, similar to basketball years ago. But the world's exposure to the sport would encourage people in all countries to play more football, leveling the playing field over time. |

Honestly, I think the world is much farther behind in Football than Basketball. Which I think is one of the problems - - can you see anything results in the near future other than Gold - USA, Silver - Canada, Bronze - Somebody else? Steve SD Blitz |

Agreed that it's further behind than basketball was, but it has to start somewhere. I'm still not sure if the Olympics should have the kind of sport that only 1 or 2 countries excel in, but it will encourage many others around the world to start playing. So I'm a little torn whether it's a good idea or not.
Too bad the World League failed (twice I think?). Was it because it was basically a minor league for the NFL and the European fans would rather watch the big time players? That league should have been a huge help in spreading interest of the NFL to Europe if done the right way. |

Its still an amateur sport here in Austria(and I think whole Europe). So people kinda have to pay to play football.
There is already the World Championship. IFAF World Championship |

Aussie rules next? Rugby League and Union have a far better shout of becoming Olympic sports. Sport should have to be played professionally in 10% of countries (maybe more) to qualify as an Olympic sport. Cheese rolling has a chance if American Football does! Money over common sense if American Football gets in. Proper football is only there in an U23 format yet is the most played professional sport in the world by miles. |

The big question would be, which players can participate.
If NFL-players are allowed, the Olympics are worthless. If not, the gap is closer, but still wide, from my point of view. |
