Always a hot topic this - and certainly a current issue as the Regular Season draws to a close.

In your view, should the Playoffs - and specifically the seedings and number of teams to make the close season - be reviewed and changed?

Interesting piece by Brian Billick here to use as a founding for debate :

Brian Billick - Playoff Seedings

Would expanding to 7 or even 8 teams per conference improve the Post Season?

Would it make it fairer?

Is there anything wrong with the current set up? Especially when you consider either Denver or Kansas City will drop to #5 when likely having the best 2 records in the conference?

Should be an interesting debate!

While they insist on ridiculously small divisions, yes it is perfectly fair, and no I do not think the number of playoff teams should be expanded.

If divisional winners do not automatically qualify, what is the point of winning the division?

However, with just 4 teams per division, imbalances are bound to occur. Change it to 4 divisions of 8, and in my opinion it all becomes a lot fairer.

This paragraph from the article you posted sums up my view perfectly.

"The downside would be a slight dilution of the regular season. Among professional sports leagues in America, the NFL has the most meaningful regular season because it has avoided the playoff inflation that has beset the NBA and NHL. Not to mention, limited action heightens single-game intrigue (one NFL contest carries the same competitive weight in a team's season as 10 MLB ballgames). With an extra playoff team in each conference, the NFL's unparalleled regular season would lose at least some of its gravity."

Also I feel that something quite important hasn't been mentioned. Comparing records across divisions isn't always fair as teams have a different schedule, that's why it's fair to give division champs a PO seed. For example, the Colts will have a better record than the Raiders but the Colts had the benefit of playing the Jags, Texans and Titans twice, all pretty poor this year while the Raiders had to play the Broncos, Chiefs and Chargers twice. Two of the best teams in the league and a Chargers team that's probably better than all 3 of the Colts divisional rivals.

Schedule is also the reason why I'd be against 4 divisions of 8 teams because if each team had to play their divisional rivals twice that would eat up 14 of the 16 games meaning that you'd play teams outside your division once every only once every 12 years, that's ridiculously low!

I agree with the general consensus so far that the amount of playoff teams is about right as it is.

However, that gives way to the following argument.

Should the play off teams be seeded as they are OR should they be seeded according to end of Regular Season record.

Indeed, should, in the Wildcard games, the Divisional Champs be given HFA??

If Kansas (say 13-3) end up going up against the Colts (say 9-7 or 10-6), when you take into account previous comments in terms of schedules, why should Indy be given HFA.

Could the seeding structure be tweaked if not the number of teams?

I'm not 100% sure how I feel about this one. On the one hand it was ridiculous when a few years ago the 7-9 Seahawks hosted the 12-4 Saints in the wild card round (or something like that). On the other hand sometimes it's harder to go 9-7 and win a tough division than to go 10-6 and finish 2nd in an easy one.
