I kind of think a team running only one kind of play is easier to predict and so easier to defend. If they were using more formation, maybe thay would win even more easily.

Offtopic: I am impressed by your knowledge of the game

A team can spend all game in Shotgun 2 WR but run an infinite number of plays.
- WR left runs a deep route, medium route, short route.
- WR right runs a deep route, medium route, short route.
- TE left stays in to block, runs a short route in the middle, runs to the outside.
- TE right stays in to block, runs a short route to the outside...

If it would be that way, I had no problems with it.
But as in RZA, nobody throws medium or deep so the distance of the throw is always dependent on the distance of the down, so again highly predictable

In RL you would probably line up your DEs wide and shift the MLBs more to the outside if using 3-4-4, but in RZA you cant adjust, just watch the other team march over the field with always the same play

And I am pretty sure, 2 of the plays (WR outer screen) are just used, because there is no option to not run that play if you pass to the outside

I totally agree with your sentiment hollyhh, I think more flexibility in the play calls (both on O and D) would be the best way to address this issue. If the offense could decide what, at least some, individual players do (TE stay in to block or run a route for example) and the defense could focus inside/outside or even double team certain players, or at least positions, it would help quite a bit.

I agree with the frustration when you face a team playing Shotgun 2 WR and consistently only passing to the 2 WR it would make sense for the defense to double team the two WR even if it means leaving a gap in the middle.

Come to think of it maybe simply allowing the defense to focus inside or outside would help quite a bit. The offense can decide to only throw to the outside and there's nothing the defense can do about it here in RZA. If the D could "lock" the outside throw the O might be forced to use the TE more and throw up the middle which would mean more diverse plays.

Don't forget that you as a manager can easier prepare you defense playbook against low fomation offenses.
So this is up to you.

With these sorts of things you have to be careful the game doesn't flip to a point where you have to use every formation to be able to win. That would take away the individuality of a lot of playbooks and mean that it would just be based on who has the better players as every team would be forced to run the same "use every formation playbook". I don't want to have to start using the spread formations everyone seems to think are great, that's not Bobber football!
The way forward would definitely be to have multiple plays out of each formation and defensive double teaming, i really like this idea.

I think whats confused here are "plays" and "formations". in theory there can be multiple plays out of each formation, even if its just out of one formation and in one direction - different WR routes and so on, we just wouldnt know about it. (we are in Platos cave after all and only see shadows of whats going on in the play by play

and its not true that every NFL team uses every available formation, that would be a sign of a team without any identity. most teams have a few base formations they operate out of and they use a variation of different plays out of the same formation to keep defenses guessing.

Except the offense is more flexible than the defense which is my problem.

On O you can decide to only pass or run to the outside, on D you can't tell your players to expect the outside pass or rush and leave the middle of the field "open".

This is why it would help to know how the zones are employed in the game. I know how they're supposed to look and function IRL, but I'm not confident that they look and function the same way in RZA.

To simulate that, I would suggest a penalty to lessen the success of a specific play, if it is used too often.

We have such a mechanism in the engine since seasons

In the match settings there is an option to 'run and pass', will this random factor of running and passing the ball get tracked and receive a penalty or does the randomness bypass the mechanic, regardless of the formation?

If this bypasses the mechanic this is a huge advantage over teams that use scripted playbooks.
Secondly, can we also get the 'run and pass' option put into playbooks for those that do not use match settings please. Currently we do not have this option.

From my point of view there is no need for it
