Mrs. dpierce and I spent a good portion of the day digging out of WINTER STORM STELLA! (Old guy question: Who decided to start naming snowstorms and why? What's next, summer thunderstorm Rex?)
Source: https://dsx.weather.com//util/image/w/stella-things.jpg?v=at&w=485&h=273&api=7db9fe61-7414-47b5-9871-e17d87b8b6a0 My home is almost directly beneath the lower large snowflake. Were any other RZA types affected by the storm? Last edited on 2017-03-14 22:57:47 by dpierce |

The Weather Channel started naming winter storms about 5 years ago. Really big weather systems have been getting names since forever, though. They weren't given human names, but they were recorded in the historical record after the time they occurred, holidays, for example, the places they impacted, or landmarks destroyed.

We got around 17 inches (43.18 centimeters) of snow where I live.

Woah, that's quite a lot! Even though we are used to handling heavy snowfalls here in Finland, we almost never get more than 10 inches in a day.

NE corner of RI or intersection of 95 + 495 is a good proxy for me.
About 8 inches of snow followed by ~2.5 inches of rain here. Wouldn't have been too bad if I'd made one more trip out to finish clearing things before it froze (or even better - gotten it clear before the change over to rain) Learned something about the house - clear the west corner of the driveway before the east unless you want a 4 inch deep lake/ice rink. |

When we had those 60+ degree days in February I was saying the last time we saw that was followed by the "April's Fools Day" blizzard of 97.
