Yes, that's happening in the states too. I've had a dermatologist appointment postponed twice - - it's normally preventative, but I have had some serious issues in the past.

In the states, we have had a lot of deaths in nursing homes - - it seems like the virus rips right throughput the elder population in them. In the state of Pennsylvania, 60-70% of the deaths have been in nursing homes and other elderly facilities. Other states have lower percentages, but it's still a major point of failure throughout our country.

So in San Diego, they announced that next week that retail and restaurants can start to open up if they follow the proper social distancing protocols and file a plan with the county government.

Also, the growing issue that's getting a lot of headlines now is the number of deaths at nursing homes (and other elder residents). In some states, the nursing home deaths are more than 50% of all the fatalities. A little scary for those of us with older parents/grandparents.

It frightens me that so many countries are talking about relaxing the restrictions, when several countries who have done so have seen a subsequent rise in the infection rate.

The statistics from Sweden seem to show their tactics to be an abysmal failure imho. Despite a relatively low population density, they now appear to be suffering one of the highest per capita fatality rates .. however, how can we be sure the data is accurate, when each country is reporting statistics differently?

Who knows?

There are many academics who believe the infection rate is far far higher than has been reported, as so many display mild or even no symptoms. I had a horrible, lingering cough towards the beginning of February - normal for this time of year - but this one lasted, and was painful, and was accompanied by headaches and conjunctivitis - both of which can be part of the symptoms? Did I have it? Who knows?

I'm glad the topic of mental health has been brought up, I'll admit I'm struggling. My job has continued, but on reduced hours, and with the daily routine and tasks greatly changed. I'm earning 40% of what I was, my wife is earning nothing - and we still have a mortgage, and 2 kids to feed... but that is only the tip for me. I have ADHD, and am on the edge of the autism spectrum. I don't cope with change very well. My daily routine was extremely busy, but kept me sane, as it was structured - including exercise, social contact and brain stimulation. My sports clubs are closed. The pubs where I worked a couple of evenings a week are closed. The gaming clubs where I met friends are closed. My structure has gone. Money is a worry. But due to my conditions I am unable to push the issues to the back of my mind when at work - so it is affecting that too...

But my worries are small compared to the world at large. Stay safe everyone. And think carefully about how you all act when lockdown is eased, because this virus will not be going away any time soon...

Good one, Jonny. +1

And all of us should keep in mind: not everything that is allowed again is a must do thing. Common sense still applies. In Germany we see infectons raising due reopened restaurants. Crazy.

Sorry to read that you have a hard time Jonny.
Hopefully the situation in UK will evolve positively in June.

I must say I was very skeptical about the end of the lockdown in France. But after two weeks I must say the figures keep improving. This week end was for many people a 4 days holidays with a temperature of 25+°C. We witnessed many places (beaches, parks, streets) with people far to respect social distancing. We will see in a couple of days if it impacts the trends.

8 days ago, when I went grocery shopping, 75% of people were wearing masks. Yesterday it was maybe 25%. A Parisian newspaper counted people wearing masks last Thursday in touristic places. The result was 10%. We better hope that the pandemic is getting over here because many act like it.

Considering how different countries count their deaths, there are so many factors indeed. Some count death at home, others only at hospital. Some count when it is only a covid positive suspicion, others only when it is confirmed. Some count when the patient is positive even if the main cause is not covid, others only if covid is the main reason. And I won’t talk about those countries that probably hide the real figures. Any figure comparison between countries is therefore useless.

The reporting methods of many countries do leave a lot to be desired...

Even though their headlines are sometimes a little 'clickbaity', the BBC has started showing probably the most important data...

In the UK our official death toll for Covid 19 is just over 36,000 (22nd May) - those are people who have died WITH the virus, not necessarily specifically due to the virus.

However over 41,000 death certificates have been issued mentioning Covid 19 as a possibility... and that was on 8th May (!!!)

BUT

The true toll of the virus - the UK has seen over 54,000 (also up to 8th May) more deaths this year than the average figure over recent years - and this is the single most important metric... It would be interesting to see this figure for other countries too, as this tells the TRUE impact of the disease.

edit... I found it!!

The graph for New York City is perhaps the most shocking...

Very interesting read. I wonder too if other deceases such as the flu killed less this year due to the lockdown and social distancing. Also road deaths must have dropped too.

Wow...interesting article. New York certainly looks like the worst case scenario - - but conditions in NYC are unique (population density, work environments, subways). Those exist in other big cities too....but this is comparing NYC to other countries mostly.
