My general approach to traits is that I prefer things that increase quality of play a little bit but on more plays.
Traits like Ball-stripper don't seem to lead to many more fumbles. If I understand them right, the chances of causing a fumble are 2% (for argument's sake), then a 5% increase is 2.1%. 1 more fumble caused per 1,000 attempts just isn't that much. My players with ball-stripper seem to roughly match this (not statistically valid, I know), they produce maybe one more fumble every couple seasons. A trait like sure tackler would take odds of say 80% to 84%, that's one fewer missed tackle every 2-ish games. We can quibble about all of the numbers, but it stills seems like sure tackler will have an impact an order of magnitude more often. There is the possibility I totally don't understand how traits work. The one exception seems to be fearsome - it increases not just the odds, but all the number of plays. If a DE is always seen as blitzing, then you no longer need to break a block to cause a QB to feel pressure, not just increasing the odds that pressure happens but also potentially doubling the number of plays it can happen. This could be an even bigger benefit than sure tackler. |

Again, there is always the possibility that I don’t really understand how traits work.
For what it’s worth, I think my ranking would be: Fearsome Slippery/Heavyweight Sure tackler/Brickwall Ballstripper |

Interesting analysis... Steve SD Blitz Same thoughts. I probably would value slippery for a fast DE over fearsome. But ball stripper probably is overrated. IDK. Maybe it provides little value compared to the others. But I'd rather have it instead of nothing. At the CB position, I had at one time 3 of my 4 rotation players with a long reach. Now I value CB's with sure tackling. Same with SF. |
