Typical 4th down might be 4th and 1 or 2 yards and the ball on the opponents 40 (just out of FG range). What's the best option run or pass?
I feel that most people choose to run - - but a lot of the time the defense will s e l e c t 5-3-3. So if your QB has a ~65% completion percentage, maybe you're better throwing more often? Thoughts? Steve SD Blitz |

In order to answer we need a correct statistics of 4& short plays against 5-5-3 around 40 yds to the goal line ...
So how many thousand of plays we need and how many games are needed? This is my S38 stats "1/2/3 & 1" against 5-3-3 (I had no 4&1) Passing plays 15 "new first down"/touchdown 11 = 73.3% Rushing plays 13 "new first down"/touchdown 5 = 38.46% This is my S38 stats "1/2/3 & 2-3" against 5-3-3 (one 4&2-3) Passing plays 16 "new first down"/touchdown 12 = 75% Rushing plays 16 "new first down"/touchdown 6 = 37.5% not enough in order to answer... but to give food of thought I think yes... |

there are people here in RZA who have the data to give this answer
I have a 'database' from all games in Thunder 1 for S26 & S27. This shows only 6 plays unfortunately so stastically insignificant. However, if you remove 4th down, there a lot more plays with 1 and 2 yds to go. 126 runs 30 no gain or tackle for loss success rate = 76.2% 85 passes 26 incomplete success rate = 69.5% Last edited on 2020-07-07 12:23:50 by Cheesehead |
