Anybody hear about Patty Mahomes’ new deal? 10 years, $450 million. The only questions now are will he continue to produce and can the Chiefs afford to keep a good roster together so they can succeed. It will be fun to watch, that’s for sure.

Chiefs gonna go bot in the next few years. Should of played some RZA to find out you can't spend money like that!

Just kidding. I think he's a once in a generation kind of player. Happy for all involved.

That deal is extremely risky. And, some of you may disagree with that, but Mahomes has only played 2 seasons and has still yet to prove that he is good. I feel like the mass media tries to convince us that he one of the best (or, dare to say - the best ever) after 2 years? That's not convincing for me at all.
But let's say that he's indeed the best player ever. Even then injuries are a huge factor for a team that will have to deal with that. I expect that more teams will be more aggressive and will try to, literally, eliminate other team's QBs.
End even if he'll not get injured, then 2 years is a too small sample to jugde anything. He may just regress and will see a situation similiar to Kirk Cousins. Another thing is if he's "responsible" for his stats. Chiefs bolster one of the best receiving corps in NFL and their offense as a whole unit is considered one of the best. Andy Reid is also viewed as a really good coach. Having that in mind I dare to say that Mahomes may be just a good QB, who was fortunate enough to land with a good players and a good coach.
Another thing is that Chiefs are risking a lot by making that deal. 10 years is a lot and many things may change during that time. Maybe huge QBs contracts will prove to be too risky and teams will start to just draft QBs and sign them to a rookie contract, and after 4 or 5 years they will be cut out of the roster to make a space for another rookie QB. That may cause a shift of playstyles, showing more love to RBs and OLs (OLs deserve way more attention. I think that some teams are viewed as good just because their OLs are so good, so the whole offense looks better). But that is just a speculation.
That move may be one of the best decisions in a recent contracts history. I highly doubt it, but I might be wrong
Summing this us - there is too much uncertainity for me to judge if that contract is an art of genius or is just another overreaction that will make a team suffer for many years. But, of course, most of the text above is just my rambling and it should be taken with a pinch of salt

I guess there were a lot of factors here, which led to the contract.
In the past seasons, basically average at best QBs got massive contracts and if you have a winner like Mahomes and his Agent, it was clear the prolongation would happen fast and hefty.
Because consequences could have been waiting and the chiefs would lose him by making him upset.

Is it too hefty? Not sure, likely yes, but those kind of contracts are just paper, in let's say 5 years the contract will be renegotiated for sure again. Because things did change and have to be adjusted for salary cap reasons.

• It's a 10-year, $450 million extension.
• Folding in rest of rookie deal, $477M over 12 years.
• $63M fully guaranteed at signing.
• $141M injury guaranteed.

The 63 mio are basically signing bonus stretched over 3 seasons.
Next March he gets a hefty roster bonus and the guaranteed money gets over 100 mio.
The tricky part is, the chiefs have to pay the roster bonus basically 1-2 seasons in advance.

So worst case would be, the keep him for let's say 2 more seasons and realize he suddenly sucks or is severly injured.
Then the gets somewhat of 130 mio or so guaranteed by roster and signing bonus and that counts against the cap for along time.
And they have to cut him, trading is impossible.
Still not the 450-500 mio the deal suggests.

Basically this contract is the big THANK YOU for a Chiefs Super Bowl, and the hope to get more. If all fails from now on, the Chiefs still have the Ring and a big paycheck to pay, but not as high as it could have been.

The deal is often conpared to a Baseball player signung a 450 mio contract. HE will get that money, period. Mahomes only if he plays the whole time and is good.

Ever since Reid took the reins for the Chiefs, they were playoff bounds.

Their defense even downgraded down the stretch ( Eric Berry, Justin Houston, Dee Ford, Marcus Peters).

Mahomes still took this team to a whole new level.

Remember this team hasn't been relevant in 20 years, even gave juicy (at the time) contract to Matt Cassel based on a 1 year rental for the Patriots in 2009.

But guys like Dak, Wentz, Goff might get it wrong and base their requirements based on this. It will get the QB market biased

As a Rams fan I feel like they have already overpayed with his last contract. I hope that they will find a young QB rather that pay him even more. I'm not saying that Goff is a bad QB, but he needs a top-tier OL and playbook to achieve good results.
I'm not sold on Wentz and Prescott too. Wentz is too injury-prone to play a complete season I feel. Meanwhile Prescott seems to try to get a massive contract. I've read that he could have rejected a multiyear 32-35 million per year contract, so it seems that every QB will try to get as much as possible.
There are also other QBs like Murray and Jackson that will probably get 35-40 million/year contracts.
And here come Pats with their salary strategy signing Newton to a prove-it contract (or just a one-year contract while waiting to draft a QB in the upcoming draft) for a... 550 000$ guaranteed. Although I wouldn't be surprised to see them tank to draft a next QB.

I wouldn’t be so sure about that. TB12 himself was a 6th round pick, and we all know how that turned out.

Sure as a top level QB you will want the best money you can get, since you only have that few seasons to get that.
The reality is, that the 1st contract is quite good or even very good as rookie, but limited by the rules.
If you are not a 1st round pick, you get massive less money.
If you then did prove to be top level after 3 to 4 seasons (or sometimes less) you want that 2nd contract to be THE contract, since you don't know want comes after that.
The owners, GMs and/or coaches want this to be as low as possible, the agents and players want this to be as high as possible.
If there are doubts regarding longterm status or the demands are off the chart, you play the franchise tag game or you let them go.

So, yes, if you are Dak Prescott and someone offers in a complex contract something between 30 and 35 per season, but not guaranteed, you decline if you think 40 to 45 are possible.

For some, like me, this sounds rediculous, but the truth is, this system is money driven and only that. Loyality does not pay off and if the price is not right you get off the boat (forced or on your own will) fast than you can say 'lifetime <insert franchise name here>.

That goes back since ages.

The next season, if there is one, will be very interesting, since the pandemic will shake up the supposed to be unbreakable system massively.
The teams NEED to play, otherwise the TV money doesn't come in, hence you can't pay the players, coaches etc.

The question is now, how and when.
