I wouldn’t be at all surprised if this has been suggested before, and as I’m typing this I think I might have suggested something similar, but it would be really fun if we could have some sort of national competition where teams are assembled out of the best players of each country that compete against each other in World Cup-style competition. Each season (or every X number of seasons), this competition would occur. Managers could run for election to manage these teams, and maybe we could add a national prize that goes out to all managers in the winning country. How does that sound? (I think one thing that might help this process is if managers would be able to naturalize their players without changing their names, because I don’t like to change the names of my draftees. Just a minor thought).

I played a basketball sim that did this and it was a big success. It had an 'Olympic' style competition and also a youth competition. They were a lot of fun, managers were voted on by respective countries and it was a benefit to the young players chosen as they got exp boosts for the extra games.
Unfortunately basketball is way more popular than football in Europe so the top 15 countries were pretty evenly spread and basketball only needs 10-12 players. The US is a 3rd of the user map here so we'd need to come up with some kind of grouping to pose a challenge and even then you couldn't split them into more than 6ish teams without the US staying at a large advantage. I like the idea, but implementing it fairly seems to be a large hurdle. |

Good point. We could do it by region, but that would severely limit the amount of teams in the competition. We could do a league restructure to create more regions to allow for this to happen smoothly, but that would be difficult and probably not what this game needs anyways. We could also just create a qualification that each player would need to get into this competition, and create new teams and a new league for this specific purpose. Just a thought.

we discussed this numerous times in the past 9 years. Those "national teams" mean always you would turn an elected manger to be head coach of such a team. One guy can do things while other are just visitors. Too much work for too less fun.

They could be automatically selected and play a random playbook (like the All-Stars). I think a small friendly tournament between the 8 regional All Stars Teams would make the off season a bit more fun between supporting your regional team and seeing how many of your players get selected and how they play. |

If we make a small friendly cup with these 8 teams it would take 5 games to finish the tournament (3 group matches + semi-finals and final) which could be played the same day as the league PO, first 3 rounds during WC Round, Divisional Round and Championship Game, Semi-Finals could be played on Relegation Saturday and the Final the day of the SuperBowl. It would give non-PO teams an extra thing to look at during the offseason.

If I remember correctly we did also suggest some sort of region vs region cup without some sort of all star team, but like a davis cup format, so many teams vs many team and the final overall score does determine the winner.
That would be more fun for the managers than an all-star format, from my point of view. |
