Thanks for the write-ups Chrill and we miss your excellent recaps and musings over at Admirals

I'll keep tweaking the defensive playbook with your tips in mind.

Lusaka, whatever you are feeding your QB, keep feeding him

It was scary watching him comeback in the 2nd half, we were helplessly flailing around out there

I have a feeling you will have your revenge in our league match tomorrow

If I'm honest, I haven't touched the playbook neither in defense or in offense, I only modify the settings for each game.

But for this season if I plan to look at how I can improve the playbook, but my studies and work have not allowed at the moment.

Leadhills Wonderers 17:23 Córdoba Kalifas

The Kalifas won their second game in this Cup, too. They scored the first and the second Touchdown of the game and never looked back. A promising drive by the Wonderers in the second half was intercepted by the CB of the Kalifas, leading to a fieldgoal to make it 17:0. The men from the Leadhills scored a TD later in Q2, which was concluded with two long FG-attempts that both failed. The Wonderers rallied in the second half, but failed to keep the home team from scoring.

Is it true that the Kalifas are still using the Basic Defensive Playbook? I oversaw that last time, concentrating too much on the offensive side of the ball. Of course that doesn’t matter as long as the games are won, but opponents being able to download the Basic Playbook to study how they can use it to their advantage will become a dangerous trap door sooner or later.

You'll meet again today? That's exciting... I'll keep an eye on that if I'm still awake

That's crazy, I would not have thought that But keep it up, you seem to have a good hand for that

As some of you are starting to thin out their roster by selling players that may not be the greatest prospects, this week we’ll look at how adding good players to certain positions help you improve the team faster. But before we do that we have to recapitulate what a good (or valuable) player really is.

A good/valuable player being able to immediately contribute to your team’s success has good to great physical skills, good teamwork and his fair share of intelligence. Beyond that he should have the skills that are beneficial for his position at around 25–30. Of great importance here is that it’s not just one skill of need that’s fleshed out, but multiple. Look for balanced players. You’ll likely find those CB prospects who have great physicals and a tackling value of 45, but other non-physical skills are below 15. That may look great, but it has more down- than upside.

As Buziano wrote in his post on page one of this thread, players with 2 very advanced skills are a lot more expensive on a weekly basis than those with multiple skills not that high. It’s crazy, but true.

What you get beyond a very expensive player when you chose to buy one who has only one skill, but that’s maxed out, is a player that you can not use efficiently. It may be that a CB needs Speed and Tackling as an A-Skill, but he also needs Vision to "know" where to go with the Tackle, Positioning to be at the right spot and maybe even Catching to haul in that Interception. These skills don’t even need to be fully developed, as I already alluded to here, because the quality of a skill with value 30 is already pretty awesome.

And the player will, although he has a greater range of abilities, be cheaper. Which is always good. No need to stress your economy this early in your career, right?

I did watch the game yesterday, and it was a lot of fun. As I already told you in the PN I wrote: Your Defense already has a very sophisticated look. And your QB plays out of this mind right now

We have established what to look for in valuable prospects, now we dive further into complementing the roster.

Disclaimer: This is the way that the HAMBURG SEA LIONS were built, with mechanisms in mind how successful teams IRL are constructed. As was pointed out to me in another part of this forum (and in another language, so you may not understand what’s said there), this game does not work like real life football. Interestingly enough the way the SEA LIONS are built seems to be a solid one since we are kind of good, even after only 4 seasons in, so I’m pretty confident that the things I’m about to write are not entirely wrong

I’d suggest that you complement your existing squad with Linemen first.

A good Offensive Line will help you many ways, and I’d build from the inside out. A great Center and the two Guards will block for the Running Back and the Full Back, improving your Rushing Attack a great deal that way. Beyond that they’ll provide protection for your Quarter Back and may give him a few seconds more to throw the ball accurately. You’ll need good Offensive Tackles, too, to move the rushing Defensive Ends of your opponent away from your QB. Look for Linemen that are strong, have good Vision, Footwork, Positioning and Intelligence. Good to great Teamwork is also mandatory. Having the special traits „Stone Wall“ (for OC and OG) or „Pass Blocker“ (for OT) doesn’t hurt either.

On the other side of the Ball a great Nose Tackle can disrupt the Rushing Game a very great deal, especially when he’s a „Brick Wall“ and/or „Ball Stripper“. You should have at least one very good Tackle on your team that you can line up as NT or, with a second one in a four-man-front, as DT. Tackles should be, as their counterparts on the Offense, strong, good team players and bring the same non-physical skills (only that they tackle instead of block). Other useful Special Traits are „Sure Tackler“ or „Heavyweight“.

When it comes to defending the pass the most disruptive player in the vicinity of the Passer is the Defensive End. He breaks through the Offensive Line trying to sack the QB, and even if he’s not executing the Sack himself because he’s picked up by the FB, he’s making way for the LB/SS to blitz the Ballthrower.
DEs have the same none-physical skills as their buddies in the middle of the Line, but are faster to get around the Edge.
A welcome Special Trait for a DE is „Fearsome“ that makes the QB uneasy.

Being set up for the war in the trenches will help you a great deal to be competitive. Of course having good to great skill players will help too, but you won’t have too much fun with an awesome WR if your QB doesn’t have the time to throw him the ball. But having great Lines will have you in position to be successful even with mediocre skill players… and then upgrading THEM will lead to really good play for your squad.

That’s at least how I experienced it

Besides beefing up the Lines with big guys there are positions where you can add really good players who’ll then almost immediately make a difference, like these two:

QB - Having a well developed and experienced QB will add to your offense being more reliable. QBs should be intelligent, good in Passing and Vision and quick with their feet, meaning high Speed and Agility. Strength is good too, and welcome special traits are "Natural Leader" and "Strong Arm". A good QB is more expensive, and he will not make the game easier for you, because playing/gameplanning is still your job. But you won’t fear turning the ball over all that much, which opens up possibilities to pass the ball more, even against better opponents.

MLB - The Middle Line Backer is the counterpart to the Quarter Back, which means he must be equally smart and agile, equally good in Vision, has good to great Positioning and great Physicals, with Speed being slightly more important than Strength when you intend to Blitz a lot. He may even be good in Catching to pick the opposing QBs on a regular basis. The same applies to the OLBs, too, of course. Two other managers told me that a great MLB needs to be "Fearsome", but LBs can be "Ball Strippers", "Heavyweight", "Slippery", have "Long Reach" or be a "Track Star". The LBs are the first line of Defense for the Pass, the second for the Rush. So having good players there will help a lot preventing the opponent from scoring.

You could go on with the other skill positions, and every position needs to be inhabited by great players if you want to win it all. But it’s almost impossible to buy a great squad when you’ve just begun, and it would be useless, too, because you certainly have not the right playbook in place to give your great team the advantage over other great teams. So it’s a matter of time.

Both positions mentioned above, though, as good of an impact as they can have on your team, won’t work to their full capacity when your Lines are weak. Like Coach Sirianni said sometime last season: "It’s all about the Lines!"

So we're already on our last gameday in the group stage of the cup. Which means we will have to say goodbye to 4 teams today, sadly. Here's a quick overview how the chances of each team are to advance:

Group 1

The Córdoba Kalifas sit comfortably atop the group with two wins, playing the Lusaka Antilopes today. They would have to lose by a big margin to not advance since their point differential is pretty good.

The Antilopes would advance with a win over the Kalifas, although they theoretically could even then be caught by the Ubernoobers if their points margin is to small.

The Ubernoobers will advance if they win against the Leadhills Wonderers and the Antilopes lose. And even if the Antilopes win the Ubernoobers could advance with a win, but they would have to make up a point deficit of 25 points to jump the squad from Lusaka.

Even the Leadhills Wonderers still have a chance to advance if they win against the Ubernoobers and the Antilopes lose, because they managed to keep both of their losses close and only have a PD of -10.

Group 2

The SEA LIONS will very likely advance to the next round.

The Outlaws will, too, if they manage to win against the SEA LIONS.

The Derby Rams will advance of they win against the Juggernauts and the Outlaws lose.

The Juggernauts have a theoretical chance to advance, too, but they would have to win by a big points margin against the Derby Rams to make up a PD of -37... and the Outlaws would have to lose, too.

Good luck to everyone

Game Day 3 came and went, and now we have only 4 teams that advanced to the playoff round of the cup. But before we go there here’s a quick re-cap of the events how they unfolded yesterday:

Lusaka Antelopes 27:13 Córdoba Kalifas

The game took an ugly turn for the Lusaka Antelopes in the second quarter. They had only allowed 3 First Downs by the Kalifas in Q1 before the team from Córdoba took the ball with 12 plays 80 Yards down the field and scored a TD. Even then the Defense of the Antilopes kept them in the game, but their QB apparently needed a bit of an adrenaline rush, throwing the ball twice to the opponent for two additional field goals, making it 0:13 at halftime.
When the Kalifas missed a FG in Q3, after a great Punt-return, the Offense of the Antilopes finally woke up, scoring a TD right after the failed FG-attempt. Another three and a half minutes later the QB of Lusaka took the ball and ran it in for an 18 Yards TD. The Defense of Lusaka allowed just 2 new First Downs after that, and with one more TD and two FGs in the fourth quarter the Antilopes won their second game of this cup.

Juggernauts 40:6 Derby Rams

The Juggernauts needed a big win to keep their chance for the playoffs alive, and the squad by manager Base26 obviously was prepared the right way. They scored a Touchdown on their very first drive and added 2 more in the first quarter while successfully preventing the Rams from scoring. Q2 basically consisted of two drives that ended in field goals for both teams, and it ended on a very humorous note when 5 (!!!) FG-attempts were missed in the final 25 seconds of the half.
In the second half the Kicker of the Juggernauts found his Mojo again, and after a 44 Yard Fumble return touchdown for the visiting team he added another 3 Fieldgoals, making it 40:3 at the start of the fourth quarter. After that the Derby Rams weren’t able to reach the first Down marker more than twice and only managed to score one long FG. With the final whistle the Juggernauts had done everything they could and had to wait how the second game in the group turned out.

Outlaws 13:37 HAMBURG SEA LIONS

The Outlaws had a good start to the game, despite being one FG behind after 8 Minutes. They caused a fumble after that, taking the ball all the way into the opponents territory and kicked a 40 Yard FG to tie the game. But then the QB of the SEA LIONS took matters in his hands and scored 2 80 Yard Passing TDs in the first half while the Kicker scored 2 additional FGs.
2 more TDs by the home team in the second half closed the book on a potential win by the Outlaws. They would have had the chance to advance to the playoff, but just scoring 10 points in the second half wasn’t enough to swing the point differential in their favor, so they had to submit their second place in the group to the Juggernauts.

Leadhills Wonderers 17:16 Ubernoobers

After the win of the Lusaka Antelopes in the first game of the day, both teams in this match-up had to win by a rather big points margin in order to advance to the playoffs, with the Wonderers having to make up 21 points, the Ubernoobers even 38. So it was only understandable for both teams to try and prevent the opponent from scoring to keep the own chances of a high victory alive.
But with both Defenses working really good neither Offense was able to score many points, hence making it the closest game of the whole game day. The first score was a 66 Yards Passing TD by the Wonderers, but the Ubernoobers did not cave in and kept fighting, keeping it a close game until the end. They even had the chance to win the game, but ultimately the Kicker wasn’t able to connect on a 57 Yard FG try.

Not much more to say than on the other two game days. It sure shows that establishing a more advanced Defensive Playbook already helps a lot to keep up with the opposing teams, since all the teams with an own Playbook won their games (or played close games, as in the last one with the Wonderers and the Ubernoobers). It’s easier to set up than the offensive playbook, because you do not need to think „what will my opponent do?“ as much as „what can my squad do?“. And having a good Defense in place will help a lot with planning the offensive part of the game, since you do not have to worry about getting shot out anymore.

With these results we say "thank you for participating in this first edition of the Bootcamp Friendly Cup" to the Leadhills Wonderers, the Ubernoobers, the Outlaws and the Derby Rams. But don't go away, despite not playing the Cup anymore. There's still input to come in the next two weeks that'll help you on your way to a successful football team
