If a team has marked themselves for an automatic challenge pool acceptance and another team challenges them for that day before the challenge pool kicks in, why not automatically accept that challenge?

I assume here that it matches their day and home/away criteria set for the challenge pool.

The automatic challenges in the challenge pool get accepted automatically.

The non-automatic challenges need confirmation.

From my understanding, this sounds right to me. You did agree to receive random opponents, not someone who knows you are in the pool, and "abuses" this to create matches with you over and over again.

I was thinking (loose definition) that it is good to play those specifically interested in playing your team than those interested in any generic challenge. Given the experience doesn’t change, I couldn’t see any loss. I hadn’t considered being spammed, but even then, is there any loss?

I must admit that this thought was mostly caused by missing interesting games.

To be honest, I don't understand exactly how automatic challenge works.
I'm in the pool for friday matches since the beginning, home and away (checked again now for peace of mind), and I never (never) had an automatic match set, while I saw many times "xxx challenged you" and after a variable time "challenge cancelled for xxx accepting another challenge", obviously while I was offline
