So theres this new blood thats posting on in my league message boards and he's going by the handle Niners. Now theres an off chance he could be talking about the 1899s which was the first proposed team name of my home soccer team the Houston Dynamos but I get the feeling he's named them in favor of one of our most culturally liberated cities San Fransisco 49ers.

I like the Niners.. never had anything against them. They beat the cowboys. But what is the appeal world wide with this team? I woulda never guessed that so many peeps were such a fan of the Red and Gold. They're running a monopoly of the hearts in this game... is -TOG-sponsored by Jerry Jones? What am I missing? People hate Jay Cutler because I woulda put money that Da Bears were America's most beloved team.

I think maybe the liking for the 49'ers comes from the Bill Walsh/Jerry Rice/Joe Montana era ... and here's one or two possible reasons why :-

"West Coast offense" was always good to watch. "Ground and pound" can be a very effective method in American football, but people tend to really like a team like the 80's 49ers who could cut you to ribbons with their west coast offense....passing teams are probably easier on the eye than rushing teams.

Bill Walsh always seemed like a nice guy, so did Jerry Rice, and Montana too. Some teams/head coaches seem easy to hate (Rex Ryan for example), but I think it would be hard to hate Bill Walsh/Jerry Rice.

The 49'ers had great success in a short period of time ....that brings attention to a team, usually positive attention, and some people are attracted to successful teams.

I know that two of the best supported/well-liked NFL teams in the UK are the 49'ers and the Bears ....I'm sure that the reason is ... UK TV started showing American Football in that era i.e. the Mike Ditka Bears and the Bill Walsh 49'ers ....that's the reason for the large (in relative terms) support for Bears/49'ers in the UK.

I would agree with the above post - the NFL really hit the UK in the mid 80s and boomed thru the 90s - Sky Sports exceptional coverage of the NFL now (and for about the last decade ish) has seen the UK go NFL crazy - but team support is much more historical than recent - the below list was taken from NFLUK who listed the team all their members had listed as the one they supported - obviously this can be affected by many things, but i think it gives a fair overview of the teams and their support in the UK :

Patriots 20,200
Dolphins 15,100
Eagles 11,600
49ers 10,500
Giants 10,300
Cowboys 10,300
Redskins 10,300
Packers 10,100
Bears 10,100
Raiders 9,400
Steelers 9,000
Falcons 9,000
Colts 8,300
Broncos 6,800
Buccaneers 6,800
Seahawks 6,600
Rams 6,200
Jets 5,300
Bengals 4,900
Vikings 3,800
Panthers 3,800
Ravens 3,500
Chargers 3,500
Titans 2,700
Saints 2,500
Chiefs 2,200
Bills 2,200
Browns 2,200
Jaguars 2,000
Lions 1,400
Cardinals 1,300
Texans 1,100

Id argue that the Patriots and the Eagles are probably the two teams who wouldnt have had *that* much support out of the 80s and 90s and are much more recently well supported team - the Pats because of their success and the fact they have "England" in their name! But the names atop the list are id guess the usual suspects - the Dolphins very much because of Dan Marino and the masses that flock(ed) to Miami/Florida for holidays in the 80s and 90s also.

I was about to say a bunch of stuff but seeing the Texans at the bottom like that made me forget everything I was about to say.

Ya'll like the Patriots.. a team who's logo was an anti-red coat up until the 2000s but hate the Texans... the football factory state? I feel like I need anti-depressants.

Ok.. all you 80's 49er fans. If you are a fan of the Bulls, Yankees, AND Manchester United. Know that me and you talking about non-simulated sports is never going to happen. Its best for the both of us.

If the fanbase of some teams does derive from the 80's/90's (49'ers,Bears,Broncos for example) ....when did the Texans start out ... 2002 wasn't it ? .....and so lets be frank about this ...from a UK perspective, plenty of people won't even have heard of the Texans.
.... if you're talking NFL, and again apologies for the UK slant on this .... people only know the Cowboys as far as Texas goes ...they might remember the Oilers, but I doubt it ...and US College Football doesn't really appear on the UK radar ...sorry.

The patriots logo ? ... again, who would know or care ? .... the reason for Patriots popularity over here is probably their performances since approx 2000, they tend to be there or thereabouts for the Superbowl, and that has gained them a relatively high profile over here with NFL fans.

Bulls ? are we talking Chicago Bulls ? if so, it'll fall on deaf ears ... Basketball is tiny over here, and Baseball is a non-event too.

Interesting that you mention Man United. The Glazers purchase of Man Utd has probably driven out plenty of UK Tampa Bay fans ... the Glazers are strongly disliked over here.

People over here are seeing things from a different perspective ...stuff like "football factory state" ... people would neither know nor care.

you'd have to explain what you meant by the whole 49ers(Cowboys)/Bulls/Yanks/Man U thing ... I read the post twice but it still didn't seem that coherent. I sort of got a sense that you were peeved by the fact that everybody around the world seems to know who the Cowboys are, but nobody outside Houston knows who the Texans are .....but unfortunately the rest seemed to blow away on the summer breeze ........

An 80s 49ers fan would likely support Liverpool anyway....Man Utd's dominance of the Premiership didnt start until the early 90's. Early comment about the Glazier's very true though.

Basically people who follow those teams are bandwagon fans. its a saying around here in the states amongst people in my age group who grew up around the time when the Niners or Cowboys/Bulls/Yankees dominated our pro sports. It takes little guts to like dynasties that win on a habitual basis. As a kid its cool.... as an adult though..

your comment about folks around the globe liking the Niners cause of the Rice/Montana/Young era brought it up to mind. you dont have to explain your fondness for any team.. it makes sense. We have a ton of Barca/Man u supporters here and its just the way it is.
