Fairly serious flaw with this ...

When a RB turns 30 you would just make him a LB. Everything but the carrying would be transferrable. The way the game is set up with no decline - a 30 year old RB would be better than most LB that are are under a certain age.

Possible scenario:

All players are locked into their positions when they turn 30 (although, realistically it doesn't make sense after 25, but for the sake of making a sound plan we will go with 30).

Age range of retirements by position:

QB: 32-37
RB: 30-34
FB: 30-35
OL: 30-35
TE: 30-35
WR: 32-36

DL: 30-34 (although if it were possible to separate de and dt I'd have dt longer)
LB: 32-37
SF: 32-36
CB: 30-35

Punter and Kicker...eternity? lol. Seriously 32-38

Gunner and KR I don't know...I mean i'm sure many people don't have a designated person there. In my opinion they shouldn't really be depth chart positions. Special teams players outside of kickers and punters on an nfl roster are really the #5 or 6 wr or cb or something. Perhaps that is another suggestion.

Well personally I'd lock the positions down by 25 regardless of this.

Really I don't like it. With no decline, older is better in RZA so positions that go on old will dominate positions that decline early.

For example ... QBs v RBs - the overall quality of QBs will be massively higher than RBs. What do you do - give RBs a buff off say they play 10% better than the skills suggest ?

Punters and Kickers last the longest ... already these positions are skewed because of the lack of skills but basically just reinforces the fact teams will be able to have as good a kicker/punter as they want as they have so long to train them in fact probably every kicker will be a dual K/P probably not what you want.

Just don't think its worth it ... unless you introduce skill regression over 30.

I say don't change a thing. How many rb's older than 30 produce at high levels? Not many. When do a lot of QB's reach that confident but not cocky level? When they are mature. It takes a qb longer to mature than a rb. I mean, my goodness are qb's lighting up the world here? No they are not. Perhaps that is when the passing game actually gets going? This is just the reality of football.

There is no reason that a rb and qb have to have the same skill level at the same age...

MikeMike,

What if players over 30 (31?) can only train PC? A team would be able to keep a veteran player, but not continue to train him to a point where his skills were out of whack when compared to others.

That seems a sensible move generally .... have players plateaux at 30.

still not sure how it improves the game though (variable retirement age) - realism not always better. Will just adjust demand for player positions - presumably RBs will go through the roof in demand whereas a Kicker draft pick will be virtually useless.
