I definitely think positioning should be there as a skill, but it's mainly a defense skill imo. I bet you guys saw NFL games where the SF moved away from his position and their team got screwed. Kind of like that OT TD for Tebow against the Steelers...

I could see positioning in football being one of two things:

1. Defensive positioning – being in the right place at the right time. Specifically, lining up in the correct spot before the snap of the ball and then anticipating how the play is developing and positioning yourself accordingly to make a play on the ball. Seems like this would be important to LB, CB and Safeties and to a lesser degree D-Linemen.

2. Positioning of the Body – getting low and getting leverage could be very important for line play. Being in the right position and using the right technique to block (and perhaps pass rush). Seems like this would be important to OL’s, TE’s, FB’s and DL’s and to a lesser extent LB’s.

I think the fact that we are trying so hard to reason out what this skill is says tons about it. It is the only skill that isn't obvious out of all of them. I know he doesn't want us to know how much and to what degree each skill affects positions, but we should have a VERY clear understanding of what the skill does. This one doesn't fit.

From the MANUAL:

Positioning

"Positioning is the skill which helps each player to enter his spot on the field or to run his route. It is also important for a defender to determine on which side of the attacker he should participate in the play."

:...enter his spot on the field..." sounds like knowing your offensive or defensive assignment on the play.

I see that as an intelligence factor. I mean are you that stupid of a player to not know where you are supposed to go? lol. BTW football intelligence isn't always what we think of as intelligence in real life.

Everything that could be seen as positioning can also be seen as another skill.

I know it isn't going away and I'm not trying to get rid of it (although if it were my universe I would lol) as it would seriously affect the engine and people's training. I just don't think it makes sense to have.

I see that as obvious from an European point of view but not from an American way... It's just a cultural thing on our vision of the sport...

I don't know really how to explain that but I'm pretty sure it's just a cultural thing...

I've long wondered about the positioning/vision trade off and just chalked it up to me just being in the minority. I'm with SFniner on the above in thats what I figure positioning to be. I'm basing my understading of the skills based on my years of Madden video game training and as I see it positioning is a direct reflection of what the "Awareness" rating in Madden was. Basically saying that the higher the awareness rating the more skillful a player is at anticipating what the defense or offense is going to do and reacting accordingly to take advantage.

I could make the arguement that in this game Positioning and Vision should be combined into one skill and call it Awareness. I think that will relieve some of the linguistic confusion we seem to be having on the issue.. and would separate the whole "Which position uses positioning vs which position uses vision" as in R/L ALL positions on the field rely heavily on both and their really is no difference between the two.

But I have a hard enough time convincing euro soccer fans that speed isnt the same thing as pace.
