Similar to my OL Theory thread, I want to find out what people are doing with their DL as well.

In normal football, you want your DT to be very strong run-stuffers/block-eaters and your DE to be pass rushers. I've noticed that my DL tend to miss a lot of tackles and I want to find out why.

So, what do you do? Strongest DL at DT and fastest DL at DE? What if you have one guy who is both strongest and fastest, do you put him at DE or DT?

My theory is the same as yours, but my most agile players at DE as well as the faster of the line men. You can do this for most positions, fastest play on the outside.

I pretty much mirror the oline theory except..in a 3-4 style.

In a base 4-3

DE's are fast, agile, with some strength
DT's are strong, agile, and a little speed

5-3
DE's same as above
DT's same as above
NT one strong sob. The HIGHEST tackling and if he has slippery all the better.

3-4
I want all three the same, strong, fast, and agile. If I had three dlinemen with 40+strength 40+speed 25+ agile, and 25+tackle I'd be more than happy. Although I am almost there....

here I put the strongest fastest and smartest player at NT, after that I fill the fastest players at DE and then the strongest at DT. Agility always helps.

Why the smartest at NT? Just wondering.

for stoping the run? Nah, was just a typo, by typing too fast and thinking about completly diffrent things.

EDIT: but maybe it was me thinking that the player has to beat the smartest OL player, at least the way I would sort my OL. And with that said it could make sence to let the smartest go up against the smartest, but who knows if there is something in this engine that includes "gap-reads"

I agree with you guys. Strongest players go to DT, Faster guys go to DE. Since the DT's can't get to the QB currently, the speed should go to the DE's so they can get more sacks. I may still train Speed on DT's to see if they might be fast enough to be DE's later. Otherwise Speed on DT's is a very low priority for me.

If I have a player with high speed and strength, then I think DE is the better spot. I'm hoping the combination will make make them even harder to block and they can scare the QB even more.

I don't care too much about intelligece along the DL, but it's a bonus.

But after getting destoyed by my opponent's OL in yesterday's friendly game, maybe I'm wrong.

Also, if you are missing tackles, Footwork and Agility might help, especially at DT. I'm having similar issues, and I think that is the reason why.

And I think a high Strength/Speed combo DE might be equally good at run stopping and pass rushing.

Agreed that DT's seems to miss the most tackles. Obviously tackling helps with this, but not sure what other secondary skill contribute to that. Perhaps Footwork, but I'm not sure how much of the footwork skill is implemented in the game engine (maybe Pete can comment on that).

I guess what I'm curious about it how much speed versus how much strength do you need at DE? Is 30/40 better than 40/30? Not sure...in real football, DE are all pretty big guys and none are built like a sprinter.

I threw some vision and agility into my DL training. I don't know how much it'll help in the long run, but I figure it can't hurt.

I like the 35^/40 (freakish) type DEs myself, being a fan of the late Reggie White, although Bruce Smith wasn't too shabby in that regard.
I'm not a big fan of pure speed rushers - a decent tackle can control that type of DE all day.
