In Friendly-Match today my Punter and Kicker had long Punts and Kicks. They went for Touchbacks. But in the Matchstats page the longest and maybe the average Stats ignore the long Punts/Kicks.

Is this a bug?

Or is it a bug that my low Punter and low Kicker had long Punts/Kicks?

Match: Friendly
Example - see Fourth Quarter.

Maybe someone can help:

if a punt results in a touchback, what is the yardage on this punt? the real punted yards or the yards to the 20 yard line where the ball gets placed?

if a kickoff results in a touchback, what is the yardage on this kickoff ? the real kicked yards or the yards to the 20 yard line where the ball gets placed?

for Punts:

Two stats are kept:
- gross punting average (don't think they call it 'gross', though)
- net punting average

for kickoffs:

I think just gross yards. Can't recall anyone ever showing net KO average

This means real punted yards or reduced yards to the 20 yard line for the stats?

Punters get three stats:

- total yards of all punts (the actual yards the ball traveled from the line-on-scrimmage to the point it was downed, or to the goal line, whichever is less.)

- the net yardage (which subtracts 20 yards from all touchbacks, to recognize the other team started on the 20 yard line)

- punts inside the 20-yard line (the old coffin-corner thing)

Examples:

- a punt from the opponent's 35 yard line into the endzone = 35 yards to punting average; and 15 yards to the net average

- a punt from the 35 yard line to the 1 yard line = 34 yards to the punting average; 34 yards to the net average; +1 to punts inside the opponent's 20 yard line.

It's probably just fine if you simply keep the single, total yard average info that you are are currently keeping! Mostly kickers, their agents and their Moms care about the other stuff.

I just checked some old Drive Charts from the NFL site.
They just take the yardage to the endzone for punts and kickoff into account.

Example:

2-N.Folk kicks 65 yards from NYJ 35 to end zone, Touchback.
4-10-NYJ 48 (6:37) 4-B.Colquitt punts 48 yards to end zone, Center-66-L.Paxton, Touchback.

At the moment we are using NET yardage, so on a touchback we lower the yardage by 20 yards...

How it should be?

If a punter kicks from the 50 60 yards into the endzone...what is the ONE value I am working with?

60 yards? (probably not)
50 yards? my fav one
30 yards? as it is at the moment!

I feel actual distance kicked (not counting any yards past the end zone line) is the most useful.

That tells me how far my punter is kicking the ball, so I can adjust my gameplan...if he is actually averaging 35 yards, but with touchback adjustments his stat shows 30 yards, then I am basing where I want to punt, try a FG or go on 4th down on the wrong info.

atm, I think my punter is averaging about 35 yards, so I normally I don't punt from 35 yards in. If the stats shown is for net punt yards, then I need to go to the games and see what distance he is punting. (If that makes sense?)

Now - what I don't know, is this?

Does the game engine allow a punter to decide to shorten his punt when he's standing on the 31 yard line and his punting average is 35yards? Does the game engine let him use his judgment so decide how hard to punt or does he simply punt?

If he simply punts, without any regard for where he is standing, then actual punt distance (the 50 yards in your example) makes the most sense to me.

However, if the game engine allows him to decide to try to shorten his punt to 25-30 yards to nail it inside the 10 yardline, then I'm interested in his net yardage and how often he punts inside the 20 yard line.

But, I suspect at this moment he just punts. I haven't noticed any effort on the punter's part to shorten his kicks with relationship to the line of scrimmage.

This "I have to do a smart short punt" thing will be in once we introduce the smarter special team actions, which is an open task. At the moment, the kicker/punter is doing full power on each attempt
