I would get with a maximum of 3 rivalries. You can name them once and only change them in the offseason. The positiv effect of a rivalry game would be a sold out stadium.

That would be counterproductive if supporters get more rivalries that non supporters.

One way to do this "Rivalry" thing might be to copy the system used in "Football Manager 08" (I'm not advertising/plugging the game, I'm just using it as a point of reference !!).
Here, you pick a Football (Soccer) team to manage , and on the information screen for the club (similar to the front screen here), there is info such as year club founded, club captain, chairman, etc etc ... but there is also "Fierce Rivals" and "Other Rivals".

To give you an example, I'm currently managing Sampdoria in Serie A, for this team it has the following :-
Fierce Rivals - Bologna,Udinese,Torino,Genoa,Roma,Milan,Inter
Other Rivals - Fiorentina,Juventus,Lazio,Vicenza,Palermo,Brescia,Napoli

maybe there could be a similar thing but limited to say 3 fierce rivals and 3 other rivals. I suppose you would initially set your own rivals, but maybe there is some more sophisticated/automated way of suggesting which teams your rivals might be ?

I like the idea of rivalries, 3 for non-supporters and 5 for supporters seems fine but I think instead of managers picking them they should get decided automatically, something like the teams you played the most competitive games against with a minimum of 5 games maybe.

Then who really cares if nothings put on the table or it stands for nothing? And from another angle.. if you have 10 rivals... you have no rivals.

The suggestion was to have the rivalry on the overview page and state the status of wins and losses.
What else do those rivalry do like Michigan - Notre Dame?
Or Alabama vs Auburn.
Everybody is bragging about it the whole year and they bragging about past matches and results.

OK, the are part of the regular game plan, but at the end they don't count much more in comparison to other games.

This is a FUN element.
And of course in that light: if I have 10 rivalries I can chat about it's worth more than a team with 3.

Bragging rights... true. Along with huge sponsorships.. increased ticket prices and revenue.. huge TV spots... increased player intensity (automatic playoff atmosphere) etc etc. You hear teams saying.. "I dont give a damn that we're out the playoffs or we suck.. As long as we beat [insert] we've done our job."

But I see where ya'll trying to go with this and i'm not against but I could careless if its implemented. In the proposed form the only way I would care about a rivalry game is if it was a playoff game or had potential in the standings. If those factors dont exist.. its just a game then.

True, they take money out of it, but a win or a loss doesn't count anything, only for the egos of the fans and the programs.

SUGGESTION:
I would like the idea, having a possibility of uploading a trophy like in friendly cups and the last winner of that game has it in his case until the next game.
