...because the game was not yet awash with money when I started - halfway through season 1 - transfer market was dead as a dodo.

Even after the 1st draft it was pretty quiet, then a few draft quality FAs appeared gradually during season 2 and prices started climbing.

Now the prices are obscene!

If I started now, I would sell a draftee.

I haven't been here very long (5wks), but I feel money comes easily early on. I have a 15,000 seat stadium with enough money to build a complete end plus some (@$13 mil). At the moment, I'm waiting until closer to start of next season to continue building so I don't pay unnecessary stadium maintenance. I don't see the need to sell players to build the stadium, just don't spend on anything else until then.

Exactly.
I haven't done the maths, but I've just checked my spending on previous Construction and I think a Max stadium costs approx $59 Million to build.

Now that sounds a lot ... but it isn't. In the Supercup you will get more than $4 Million (each) if you play a team with a Max stadium ...there could easily be 4 or 5 teams like this in a qualifying group.

The main costs in this game are Coaches, if you go crazy early on with Coaches it will hammer your finances.

But selling draft players when you only get 3 per season just strikes me as nuts.

I guess it depends on the level of importance placed by the manager on results at the start...

I would sell 1 draft player to get an immediate maximum stadium
Invest the income in coaches/YA and start producing quality youth players, with the right training facilities
Within 2 seasons you won't notice the loss of one draftee in terms of performance, and it gives you the earliest possible start in terms of player development and financial clout

In each of the 2 drafts thus far I've picked up 1 player who does not do a great deal for my team... a kicker in the 1st draft, and a RB in the second... my original kicker (who was ok) has since retrained as a LB, but had he stayed on kicker training he would not be far behind my draftee in terms of stats... and the RB is only 4th on my list of rushing yardage as I mainly rush with FBs - plus he has the worst average!

Draftees are not quite the be all and end all, and while you can take advantage of a crazy market to provide you with immediate financial freedom I would do so!

@JonnyP ... I think your argument makes sense ... but it only applies to a scenario where an experienced manager like yourself gets the chance to start from the beginning (it's the "if I had my time all over again" scenario).

However, I'm not convinced that it works for a new manager who has little knowledge of how RZA works. Things such as head coaches/assistant coaches/bonus points from coaches etc take a little time to understand correctly and effectively.
So does the YA ...and formulating a cohesive strategy for using the YA and developing a "production line" of good players from the YA etc etc.

I think your strategy for a newbie manager would end up with an inexperienced manager with loads of cash and not much idea what to do with it.

However, if for example, you yourself went Bot tomorrow and started up again the day after .... I think your strategy would be an absolute winner, but that's because you have learnt from your mistakes, gained knowledge along the way and you now have the RZA knowledge & experience to be able to pull off the strategy from day one. I doubt that many newbie managers could achieve that ...even ones with -TOG-experience, -TOG-knowledge is a mixed blessing ..helpful in some ways, a hindrance in others (apologies for using the 'G-word' in polite society )

On a slightly more serious note!

Spend for a 20 scout!!!!!!! Most important

I wouldn't sell your drafted players...with you just starting you will get pretty good picks. IMO ... Spend a fair amount of time on the draft. Build around them.

Scout your own team and see if there is any other players that stick out as keepers

Sell any thing else!!! just keep a minimum team.
Put everything into stadium building.
No facilities until you can afford them.

You will struggle for a season but by the second draft you will

To be fair its not that difficult to come up with a cohesive strategy. The issue is the various guides don't really come up with much in the way of guidance on this or make the little quirks clear - and you need to know about the little quirks.

I would definitely tell a complete newbie to sell a draft pick.

Once you understand how coaches, facilities etc work its a bit fraustrating waiting for the stadium to grow when you want to get cracking on implementing your plan.

I've a 45k stadium with the money to make it 60k once the rollover happens but I might sell a pick myself - if there's one I'm not that fussed about.

After some thinking, I can say: "It is a perfect idea!"
To sell 2 or 3 players from the draft. By 50+ mil price.
Build up stadium.
And by ~5-7 players with good main skills, but low talant and teamwork.
by 2-3 mil price!

Why that? I did that back in the days and I think it hurts me now (3 seasons later). I mean, of course I fired crap, but they could have been useful. There were moments when I had to promote youth players which were definitely not ready then. Just because I had holes in my depth chart.
