Don't know if it has been posted already. Here's the thing: too many coaches here go for it on 4th down every single time. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't.

When it doesn't, I think the players should suffer huge morale hits when the playbook says that they should go for it on 4th and 5+ when there is no need, e.g.,
- when the game is tied and it's not the last play of the half or the game
- in the 1st half unless it's the very last play of the half
- in the 3rd quarter when the team is behind by two scores or less
- in the 4th quarter when there's more than 5 minutes to play

All the situations mentioned above are situations when no (intelligent) football coach on the planet would go for it on 4th and long. If they did, the players would be like "WTF?!" and their belief in the coach would drop. Also, the players' morale should drop when the coach calls a running play on 4th and long.

This will prevent coaches go for it on 4th down all game long.

Sorry, to be entirely clear: I meant to say, the morale hit should affect the current game because the players would be questioning their coach if a 4th down call early in the game doesn't work. And this would be an advantage for the opposing team.

I don't see a problem. In one of my recent games my opponent went for 4th down in 11 tries and was successful in 4 of it. So he made 7 turnovers. I think it's bad enough for the ones who likes this strategy

Sorry, but if you are clearly superior to the opposition, going for the fourth down must be a legitimate tactic.

If you are confident that most of the time you will get the 1st down, and, when you don't, that your defence will more than likely stop the opposition offence, you're team would be upset if you didn't go for it.

If the tactic doesn't work, it will show up on the score board, and that is the biggest penalty of all.

It's not the time but the position on the field that is the key here. Going for it on 4th and 5 or more inside your own 40 everytime under "normal" conditions is a bit of a piss take. I have my playbook set to go for it on 4th and 1 to 3 yards every time if I'm inside my opponents 40 yard line unless I need a field goal to win/tie and it's near the end of the half or game or I'm miles behind. The penalty is not snagging 3 points and giving my opponent decent field position.

Yet, in reality, the players would be pissed and would lose faith in their coach if he keeps giving their opponents decent or good field position over and over with no obvious reason. Especially if it's a tight contest.

True, but if you put in THIS kind of stuff, you have to do it right and ALL over the simulation.
Means ups and downs (momentum) because of crucial plays, scoring, turnovers, injuries and so on.
From my point of view this is a nice suggestion, but to isolated and Peter for sure has bigger fishes to catch than to redo the engine at the moment.
