So first the question...

In the playbook options it says def formation vs pass and def formation vs run for each of the offensive formations. How does the defense determine if that same offense formation is set up for pass or rush?

Second the discussion/question:

What do you guys do with your def playbooks in general? I set mine up to deal with formations only, so I have only 7 lines in my defensive playbook. One for each of the offensive formations. Do you guys go beyond that? If you do, have you found any significant advantages? I ask because I can see if you had specific circumstances it might be helpful but it would seem to carry a big scouting workload to really use it. My thoughts are that once teams are more equalized it might become more important...not sure though...

I have always wondered about your first question as well. So far I haven’t figured out how it works. In regards that in general situations run –v- say 5-3-3 that it seems like it has its flaws and in run –v – dime stops the runner cold. Being one of the worse teams in the league it is hard to judge if it is the ME or weaker –v- stronger players. A few more games against similar strength teams this season will probably answer some of this for me.

On the second question I’m not sure it really matters that much. I have noticed that for some reason db’s will move to different sides on plays. It would be nice if you could set players to be in certain positions to attack an offensive weakness but I assume it is because of all the nuances that the ME just sets it to a default somehow. So I pretty much set it the way you do. If we could only design plays… draw, delayed blitz, play-action, bootleg, DE drop back. How cool would that be?

Your questions are why I think we should have the YA playing games, so you can try out different game plans and IF players are better suited for one position or another. But IF a frog had wings…

I pretty much ignore the first question as per the second question I set mine up like... about 7 lines.. nothing complicated.

I have a "if it aint broke dont fix it"... my defense doesnt let me down too often and when they do I blame the players. The tactics are sound.

First question: First few plays are probably defended by the "prefer" option, so the defense will line up to defend against whatever you set for that. Then it will either see that the offense did exactly what they were hoping for and continue defending against it the same way, or after a few "errors" they will start lining up against the opposite play. Maybe even take distance from goalline into the calculations and mix it up. But I'm really just guessing here, only Peter could know the exact specs how this works.

Second question: Same as you guys, 7 lines and change my prefer options to the last few games of the opponent.

I imagine the game looks at maybe an ILB's INT and based on that it predicts run/pass. Or it might be the average INT of the entire D.

I hate to use the 5-3-3 because of those nasty "there was no safety...." plays. So while I am building up my front 5, I use a lot of 3-4-4 and 4-3-4, and switch to 5-3-3 once the offense gets close to my goalline.

I figure if my safety is making tackles when the line of scrimmage is my 8 yard line, I'm already screwed.

Can't say if it works or not, as I've never done much analysis.

I have 7 lines related to off. formations, and 3 situational defenses: 1) for goalline plays, 2) if opponent has to get more than 21 yds, 3) on 3rd and long situations.
But you have to be prepared for something like this:

11:22 3 and 11 to go on own 11, BES:1.06, DB:0.5, BE:0.53, pass, Isidro Rodríguez (OC) snaps the ball to Guilherme Valente (QB), Hans Rosario (HB/C) gets the ball, he starts running over the right tackle, Andrey Petrov (DE/R) breaks through, and gets tackled by Ruslan Belayev (SS/L), forward progress: 16 yards, New first down (I-formation vs. Dime 4DL MLB 4CB 2SF)

If you opponent vary not so much between pass and rush from the same formation, than are 7 lines enough for your defense. But if you opponent has a high variation, your defense can become a problem.
Going into more detail. Your opponent use the I-Formation. He rush 3 times your defense set the formation to defense. The 4th time he pass, but your defense set the defense formation. The offense continue the passing and your defense chance to pass defense. Than the offense switch back to rushing, but you still defend the passing. You see that you are often 1 or 2 steps behind the offense.

Against such a variable offense you need defenses for any different situation. The disadvantage of this system would be that it is more inertial. You have to expect the pass or rush right for every situation, because it will take longer that you defense switch from passing to rushing defense vice versa.

In looking over two league games I have found several instances where the ME has me in a defense that I don’t have set up in the playbook. Thought it might be because of two different defenses set for run and pass for a offensive formation but it appears not to be the case. Guess I will reset the entire playbook by Saturday, and see what happens.

Use the playbook checker (or whatever its called) to figure out why the ME chose that particular defense. You probably have an ANY somewhere you don't want it.
