I would think a shrewd manager would be able to more than compete after 4 seasons. If he plays his cards right thats 12 draft players + a strong YA... thats not including if the manager wants to dab into the TM.

but to the original point. I can see the logic in whats proposed and it has been discussed in detail before on the boards. I think most people are just flat against a sort of manufactored superleague as it greatly decreases what the CoC is for. Plus those 16 managers would be insufferable to have to deal with on even a casual basis..

What about when the top guys max all their players in the main skills and then fill out on all the secondary skills - how long will that take?

1 season ~ 12 skill points per player. Vision and positioning will need about 2 seasons each so there's 4 seasons just in those 2! Then there's speed, strength, agility and at least 1 main skill.

By the time a player exits the YA he might be maxed on spd/str and that's about it. Maybe 1 player per year can be HCed beyond that.

So to just consider 1 main skill and then agility, pos and vis, that's 8+ seasons!

And that's only allowing for a 24 point boost which is conservative.

YA players will be more than just maxed on physicals. IF you train correctly.

Example: My 16 year old DL (unless strength caps earlier than I want in which case he becomes a lb).

Current pertinent stats:

36.9 strength no caps yet
26.4 speed
9.9 agility
16.1 tackle
8.1 fw
8.2 vision
6.7 position

By the time he leaves my YA at 18 he will have (barring caps obviously)

45 strength
35 speed
20 agility
30 tackle
20 fw
20 vision
20 position

I figured this by taking .5 sp per u p d a t e from regular training plus 1.2 minimum YA bonus sp. So each u p d a t e is 1.7 sp.

There are 13 updates this season left. Each season has 26 updates (although I counted 28, I must have messed something up there.

By the end of the season where he is 18 he will have had at least 65 updates at 1.2 points each. That is 78 sp. If I waited until the end of the next season when he is 19 then it would be another 31 points.

That is pretty good player from a YA, no?

Sure, but aren't you using all the HC points on just that 1 player for all that time?

Of course. So every three seasons it is as though you get an extra draft pick.

I could break it up so that I have 1 player per season who would be more like:

35/35/20 speed, strength, agility
25 main skill
20 secondary skill.

That is still a good player!

Yeah, I'm happy with the idea that you get ~ 1 starter and a decent backup or 2 per season from the YA.

But don't forget that when someone starts their YA is empty and it takes about a full season until it's upgraded as well.

It appears to be a tall mountain to climb.

And we haven't even begun to talk about the dynasty factor yet!

I do think another level (or two) of league would be useful and help promote player retention.

But I also like the NFL format of the current leagues. Seems like there should be a way to accomplish both.

Perhaps the lowest level of league could be mostly for new owners with automatic promotion to the mid level league at the end of the season, or something along those lines.

Well, if they can work out how to get more coming in AND staying then they'll eventually need something like that - a nice problem to have.

To me, making the engine simulate the sport more completely will solve all of these problems. There really isn't anything wrong with the top end of this game.
