I love to play poker. My home games circuits have dried up as the economy has unfortunately. My bucket list includes playing in the WSOP in the US and Europe. I am seriously interested to know how I stack up with really good players. I may indeed suck. I don't know, because the home games I play have become too predictable, too easy. I mean, for crying out loud, I would place 1st or 2nd almost every time.

My biggest weakness is my lack of using more math during the game. I don't spend a lot of time calculating the exact pot odds or future pot odds. I keep track of the outs I have and consider the chance that the other person has a better hand by the bets they put out and the type of player they are.

Ooh..a player!

What WSOP event(s) have you played? Ive played a $1500 NLH at the Rio and a satellite to get into a PLO event.

Personally, i think pot odds, implied odds and reverse implied odds are all more relevant to cash games rather than tournament play. Tournament play is about survival, being aware of the structure and having enough BBs at all stages through the game to make it past the bubble and into the payout. But you are right - knowing a players play, his bet sizing and his range compared to what you have is all instrumental.

People i believe use 'pot odds' as an excuse to make a call they wouldnt normally make, hoping to get lucky. In essence, they know their hand is losing, but want to see if they hit their draw, or set up, and trot out the line 'i have pot odds - ill call' as justification to it.

There is definitely a mathematical element to poker - but basically it comes down to your hand versus your opponent - and to me what defines a good player is one that can fold a big pre flop hand...lets say you have AA and raise and get two callers..flop is QJ9...you bet and get a raise....how much do you like your one pair now?

I know its all relative and hypothetical - but how a player would play there would tell me alot about him as a player. If they fold, they immediately have my respect and caution. Most players would shove...those are the ones i want on my table!

i have a game tonight down the pub and it'll be the same guys again who know the rules but can't actually play the game, i'm on a streak of just running into lucky opponents who hit hands that they shouldn't of been in pre flop let alone the river after raises on each betting round its getting quite depressing that the only way to play them is ultra tight and just check raising when you hit a hand because you can't scare them off pots at all

While I'd never profess to be any good, I was starting to do pleasantly well on PartyPoker, logging on at midnight when I got home from work, and slowly accumulating by playing sensibly, probably against the drunks who used to populate the place at that sort of time. 5/10c type games, no limit holdem.

Until THE hand... I was dealt JJ, raised a few $, and and was called (he had A-10 off suit). Flop was J-10-10. Turn was a Q. I raised a sensible amount, hoping he was chasing a straight - as it turns out he was. The river was the final 10. The only card which could have beaten my hand. I went all in, believing it highly unlikely he had got the final 10 in his hand.

I cried. And did precisely the wrong thing - kept playing for another half an hour whilst angry.

It wasn't big money in the whole scheme of things, and I could afford to lose it.... but I never went back - more annoyed at my own reaction to the bad beat than anything.

Thats just rude Jonny - you just arent getting away from that mate - you did nothing wrong and its just sick that the river gave him his one outer, with you sitting pretty. Nowt you can do pal - but even a person with one out has an out - and sometimes the poker gods just shove their middle finger right up ya. Playing when angry isnt great and you know what you did - but if you were successful up until that point then id be straight back on the horse.

Monkey, my thoughts exactly mate - Tight early doors - bet big with premium hands pre flop - sledgehammer poker. Once the blinds get decent then you can start making PFRs that get through - but otherwise tighter than a flys ass early on mate - ill be doing the same in about half an hours time.

I said it is on my bucket list to play there lol. My first home game I played wasn't the most fun but I still kept plugging along and learning more and more. I would say to Johnny to not let it get to you.

First game I played, first hand in fact.

I had 88

flop was 8 J Q

I raise big, he calls.

Ok

turn is Q.

Sweet I have Full boat! I am pumped, push all in, he calls quickly. What the hell?

He turns over JJ.

To rub it in more the river was another Jack.

First hand and I'm out to watch the game and deal the rest of the night.

I learned from it though.

I'm not bad but I am not great either. I have usually played with a few friends but now and then I entered the odd local tournament and done well.

I have had a couple of silly calls and the poker gods have slapped me down on them. What normally gets me out of big trouble is that I understand statistics and I can quickly work out my odds

my bad beat story happened last wednesday, i had k,8 with 4 players left on the big blind and all 3 players call, so i check. flop comes down 8,9,k, so i think nice and put a raise in, 1 calls the other 2 fold, then the turn comes 9 so now my 8s mean nothing but ive been the agressor so want to keep that going so put another raise in and get called again(now thinking i got a problem lol) river comes down 8 giving me a fullhouse, looking at my dwindling chip stack and the size of the pot i go all in and get called, smugly show my FH only to see him turn over pocket 9s the jammy c***
