Humm, I just scouted a LB'er from one of teh best 1.1 teams. He has 29 in tackling, he had 147 Tackles and 24 missed for a 86% rate, so it does make a diference, but does it payoff? I'm torned, but slightly inclined to say it doesn't.

PS: Thanks for sharing his stats.

If those 15 extra missed tackles ended up in the end zone then yes it very much pays off

What you need to consider is not what his tackling rate is...but what his tackling rate is against playoff-type competition. Maybe both LBs make all the tackles against lesser teams, but those are teams you're going to beat anyway....even with some missed tackles.

But against the better teams with better RBs & receivers, were the score is tight, then maybe the stub LB tackles at 90% and the other guy at 70%. That's when it really matters...

Sure, that is true, but I meantioned this player I scouted was on a top team in 1.1, so it's not like he is facing soft competition, this team was in at least one final game.

And to add to that, I just scouted two LB's from the team that won everything last season.

LB - Tackling 28.6 - 110 Tackles - 36 Missed - 76%
LB - Tackling 38.8 - 100 Tackles - 16 Missed - 86.2% (has Special Trait if Sure Tackler)

Naturaly this is a very microscopic sample size, but I am not sold on the fact that training a skill so high pays off. But it«s a personal opinion, nothing else.

PS: I also know tackling isn't the only skill that matters when making a tackle.

I think a regression analysis would come in handy on judging the importance of skills. I guess a sample of 30 players would be enough. (maybe I'll give it a shot one time when my exams approach)

However there are some things that will be difficult to integrate. When you would judge a RB for example you can't integrate formations (offensive & defensive) nor the exact strength of the OL or the opposing defense). Some tricks to avoid those externalities is to only pick RB's from the same league & only the stats from league games. That way the rushing stats will normalize.

For a RB I would certainly include: strength, speed, positioning, carrying, footwork, vision, agility. Not every variable will be explaining the average rushing yards though (or that's what we expecting)

Maybe I'll give it a try in January or earlier, depends on how fast I'll learn my course econometrics. (maybe we won't learn anything at all)
