Was going to post in the "old" Formations thread but it's gone.

Anyway, had a game recently where I played the 4-3 vs the Big-I and got killed both vs run and pass.

The 4-3 is not very good vs the run and also has a CB wasted vs the Big-I.

Since the Big-I is allowed only 1 WR I think we need a 1 CB D.

So basically either a 5-3 or 4-4 but instead of 2 CBs and a SF, 1 CB and 2 SFs.

That is a bad idea...if your pass to the TE on the "lonely" side, you might be thankful to have that CB

But the first time you know the big i is being run is when they line up in that formation. If you was talking about a real game then the CB would be wasted anyway because there just would not be the time to get the CB replaced with a SF or another LB. I think an audible where the CB drops into SF or LB to cover would be something for the next engine.

The 4-3 is always going to leave you in trouble against the run and pass on the big I because it creates mismatches.

So the CB will help with that? But then what about when the TE runs the inside route - then we have a completely wasted CB.

I think what's needed is a player halfway between. He helps on sweep plays and is also deepish on that side to help a LB with the TE even if the TE does run an inside route.

Yes if the receiver is taking a route not covered by that CB, it might be wasted.

And no, we don't allow "not symetric" defenses, except for some Safety-configurations.
