Wow...I'm sure our new manager had a fun first experience with that score!

Basically, what should an engine do? In my todays cupgame I had a "1 day team" too...he was passing a lot, with waterboys as QB...so he threw one INT after the other. I was not aware of the game, and used my standard settings, I am using in league games versus experienced managers. He got beaten really really high. Should I send an letter for excuse? I don't think so. Should the engine limit that by adding a relax mode? Could be the topic of a discussion. Should the engine make my gameplay worse just to protect the newbee and his ego? I don't believe so.

I wouldn't care by how many points I'd lose, not when I started playing, not even now if I know the opponent is better. I play a basketball sim where I recently got murdered 105-27. Better team, better players, probably better tactics too, it is what it is. This wasn't an attack against you Pete or the game itself, sorry if it came out that way...maybe I'll put a sarcasm smiley next time...

But since you mentioned a couple of options, the bold one seems like the best fit.

No.
The 'relax rule' in G*I is one of the things I dislike, I personally think that it causes distorted scores in certain special situations (e.g. where 2 human teams play, and one has a Bot defense).

Also ... there are still aspects of RZA where Points Differential matters ... e.g. 3/4/5 teams could be level on games won with a 4-12 record, the points differential would be used to determine which team was in the relegation playoffs and which team wasn't (same applies to Automatic Relegation and also to the Conf Champ playoffs). Therefore running-up the score against Bots could be a legitimate tactic in various circumstances.

A Relax Rule is artificial and could backfire in many ways......it just isn't necessary.

In the danish league there is a merci rule. Dont know the exact number but i think its a 50 point lead resulting in an instant win. Could be to technical to implement, but that way there is no backfirering from relax mode. just an idea.

In Germany the referees sometimes agree not to stop the clock anymore...I don't know if this an official ruling.

Two points :-

(1) Somehow warn new managers that, at first, they may experience some high-scoring defeats when playing against very good teams ...even in Friendlies. Maybe a new section in the Manager's License to explain this and also to explain why it happens.

(2) So why does it happen ?

Here is my theory .......

When I first started (midway through Season 2), I played Friendlies against some of the best teams in RZA (Naprzód Marsz, Leeds Celtics etc etc). I'd often lose by 50,60 points ... sometimes 70 points.

In Friendlies against new/new-ish teams (this year and last), I've regularly scored 100+ points . So what's the difference ?
I think the main difference is the Pass-friendly new engine .... in the old days of 'ground and pound', a top team could advance down the field in chunks of 5-15 yards. Now .... teams can throw a pass, break a tackle (or no tackler is nearby) and then it's a 60/70/80 yard TD .... do that a few times per quarter and the score becomes triple figures.

As long as people know/understand why something occurs, then things (like high scores) become less of an issue.

but... a 'relax rule' .... .... it's just got exploit and/or unintended consequences written all over it.

A MLB making a pick on a WR pass? Hmmmmmmmmmmmm.........what did the CB and OLB do?

That's it, dude. If the MLB don't blitz, then they usually sit in the intermediate zones, trying to pick up receivers inside and slant routs.

Just wondering if an OLB might have blitzed and so the MLB went over to fill?

I'm not sure if I mentioned the concept of the "Serious" team b4 - did I?

"Serious" teams do not spit the dummy out, pack up their kit and walk off into the sunset - they show determination and tough it out.

Serious teams only thanks!
