Franchise Contracts ...... are they actually worth it ?

I can think of certain special circumstances where it would be worth it, but ... in general, are they worth it ?

I'll give you one example :-

I've just read "the Mag" , in the Contracts section Pete has signed one player to a Franchise contract ... it says "5 years" in The Mag, but as the Manual says "You can negotiate up to 5 Franchise Contracts for a length of 3 to 4 seasons" ........ I presume that 'The Mag' reporting a 5 year contract actually means '4 years plus the remainder of this year' ????

Anyway .... the point is this :-

I've scouted Pete's player, his main skills are very close to his "skills cap for Talent" .... so the extra Money that you need to pay for a Franchise Contract, is it worth it as that player will soon hit his talent cap ??
I've not done the Maths, but a quick guesstimate suggests that it wouldn't be particularly expensive to keep signing that player to a one-year contract every year..... it might actually be cheaper (over 4 seasons) than a Franchise Contract.

I would've thought that the best (and possibly only) situation where a Franchise Contract makes sense, is when a player has a very high Talent (4.5 or 5*) and you plan to train him all the way to his (high) talent cap skills .......... because that's where the Wages vs Skills graph goes very steep (i.e. almost exponential).

You just answered your own question.

It doesn't explain some of the players that have been offered a Franchise Contract.

for example .... from last week's "Mag"

a CornerBack with 4.5* Talent ....... Pos=23,Vis=23,Tackl=26,Agi=35

Why would you go Franchise with that Player ? The Agility could cap at any time ...... and it will take a long time to get the other three skills into the mid-40's (where Franchise seems to make sense)

I think I'm missing something obvious with Franchise Contracts

You and me both. I've seen franchise contracts given to 22 yo players with skills in their mid 20's. I just don't get it. A franchise contract might give the "invincible" feeling of training any skill as high as we like, but once that 22 yo player hits 27? Renegotiate the contract for a wage that'll pop your eyes out.

The only sensible explanation that comes to my mind is that these managers don't have their real franchise players there yet, and they give franchise contracts to players they train for sale. That way they won't have to pay high wages for players they won't even use. Now why a 2 year contract isn't enough for that is another question

Something that occurs to me with pete's player, is that although there is little room left for improvement, that improvement is still a large jump in cost.

So although a lot of players have a lot of room left for improvement, a 10 point improvement at that level is still less xtra $ than maybe a 1 point improvement at the higher level.

Just because some people are using them the wrong way, you cannot say that they are not worth it in general.

On the contrary, it appears as though in general they aren't worth it ..... just the occasional very highly talented highly skilled player where a Franchise Contract is worth it.

I guess that's why the number of franchise contracts is limited?

But isn't it exactly those players a franchise contract is meant for?

That said the player doesnt have to be very high skilled you will just save less then.

Probably because the actual NFL 'franchise tag' on a player is very limited (one per club, I think) ..... so the same in RZA to keep Franchise Contracts 'special'.
