can someone tell me a summary of all this?

why are we discussing about formations again?

The Dark Side is using SG4WR to run out of and gain Jabba yardage! The Jedi’s claim that SG4WR is too powerful in a running mode while the Emperor calms it’s just a matter of the Dime defense being effective only versus the pass.

However there real debate is between who likes Carrie Fisher versus Natalie Portman.

Just a quick note about formation use in the NFL.

It is dictated by personnel and the utilization of it - and to spell players.

So if the star RB needs a breather and the backup is not too great but the 3rd WR is, then we go from the I to the 3WR for example.

But there are typically 5 main skill guys that get the big bucks and they will be on the field most of the time.

The SG4WR formation is not an every down formation. It is not a base offense. It is a pass offense i.e. it's not good to run from irl. It would need 4 Pro Bowl caliber WRs and a Pro Bowl caliber OL to have any chance whatsoever of being so. That way it could make the SFs honour the pass on every down. But a good D, especially one with 4 good CBs, would still probably handle the run - lots of tfl vs unprotected back.

Think of the DL mentality here - if it's a potential running down then run rush, else pass rush - lots of tfl. there is no way the DL would hold ground as they typically would vs a balanced O.

Honestly, in the NFL, I don't think the variation of formations has much to do with resting personnel. It's mostly down and distance based or to counter what a defense is doing.

A lot of college teams have gone to 1 RB, 4 WR spread offenses with quite a bit of success. I don't think spread offenses have really been very successful in the NFL....it will be interesting to see what Chip Kelly does in Philadelphia.

Though something like a 4WR formation is no doubt a good passing formation for passing downs, it is not nearly as good if you only have 2 or 3 quality WRs. That's when we see TEs, slot backs, etc.

There is no doubt that an offense attempts to adjust to situation and type of D, but the personnel available impose limitations on the variety.

If I had a great TE or 2 and only 3 decent WRs you'd never see 4 WRs on the field.
