compare to universe we are insignificant. we exist now...but in 5 milliards of years the earth, and us, will disappear like we appeared. universe maybe exist from +15 milliards of years...and will go on until when we'll a dream of someone. maybe we are unique...but like every other thing in universe. probably the universe itself it's unique...maybe
but... as you said, what we do on this rock...that's the problem. this is something really unique...no other species kill, starve, humiliate, imprison, steal ecc like human being. maybe we are too much unique. all IMHO
about to change thing...the problem is inside of our nature. and I believe in the theory of "Noble Savage" of Rousseau 
but when in group, every one will do things that individually won't...thats the main problem. (an intellectual/rational problem IMO) we need to change ourself....to "save" ourself and our future. but we are like sheeps...we have fear of everything...especially of ourself and of everyone.
