So what's the rule of thumb for a 4 year franchise contracts?
Start offering 150% and go from there? What's a reasonable step up when the first offer is rejected? 5%, 10%, 15%? What the maximum percentage one can expect? Does it go as high as 200%? Steve SD Blitz |

Wait until the last part of the season as players will demand the least money then

Yeah, but I need to start training his primary skill even higher this season, so I need to give him the franchise contract soon.

No way, paying only 110% is much better than whatever stupid percentage you would shell out now. And you can switch your training to another skill if you're that worried about high skills.

What I mean is this:
Say you have a guy at X amount of skill at the beginning of the season you can negotiate based around that skill level for 4 to 5 seasons for a franchise contract. If you wait until the end of the season the skill goes up and thus the starting point for negotiations. You would save for one season, but it will cost more in the long run. |

Does anyone actually have a rule of thumb on franchise contracts?
1 and 2 years are pretty clear, but I have no idea where to begin with franchise contracts... |

For myself I "award" such contracts on really young players that hit their physical caps, are allowed to stay, and start with their skill-training. These guys I push usually by training only 1 or 2 skills during the next few seasons...and keep an eye not to do too much, so there won't be a serious harm on my economy after the franchise contract runs out

Thanks. But when folks negotiate franchise contracts, where do you start relative to their current skill-based wage? 1.5 times base salary? twice base salary? I know the multiple will be more than a 2 year, but how much more?

When signed my QB to a max franchise contract, I started at 150%, but he wouldn't sign for that. I ended up signing him for just under 170%. His skills were still low enough, that he's at a fairly affordable salary still.
