Just browsing The Mag and noticed a Player with a new contract, weekly wages of $550,000 ...... I'm confused

As the maximum skills-based wage is +/- $500,000 ..... why would you ever need/want to pay more than $500,000 per week ??

I scouted this player, his highest skill is 50, he is 24 years old .... surely it would make more sense (financially) to sign him to a one-year contract (for around $500,000 or slightly lower) .... and then each year, just do the same .... i.e. keep signing him to a one year contract at that price.

Am I missing something obvious ?

That's what I would have done you should really be able to get them for around the $450k mark then

This, and the inflexibility, is the reason I am yet to activate the HR and might never.

If it had a feature where you could agree to not train any skill higher than the already highest, and then get a better deal, then I might be interested. So if a player had Tackling 30 and no other skill any higher, then the game could be programmed so that that player's skills cannot be trained higher than 30 for the remainder of that contract.

The inflexibility seems to come from you rather than HR though

You keep talking about flexibility but I feel you are missing the point. Having HR you are just as flexible and even more so. No idea why you believe it to be otherwise. Just do it already.

If you sign a player to a 1yr contract, how much more do you pay him than you normally would if his top skill didn't increase over the course of that season?

With HR you pay less (franchise contracts aside) than without HR

Simply because you cannot fire players at will.

So if I had 70 on the roster and I see a gem on the TM................

I think that if you feel your 70 man roster can get a lot better via the TM then avoiding HR is probably wise until one is very happy with one's 70 man roster.

For a one year contract you pay him less not more. For example you have a player with 5000 estimated salary. So with a one year contract you can easily sign that player for 4700(or something close to it anyways). HR is simply better. Just dont go and start from your star players. It seems most people mess up a contract or two in the beginning.

So to be 100% clear on this -

My starting QB is presently on $ 27,247. Are you saying that if I was in HR mode that I could sign him to a contract < $ 27,247 for this 1 season???
