Since a lot of people are probably offering new contracts right now after the season flip, I thought I'd raise this topic again. Obviously, the question is really...what are the impact positions and does maxing out one or two skills make them definitively better.

The obvious choice is QB...but maybe you only have one, maybe two QBs with franchise contracts, right?

Previously a lot of people had said MLB.

I've considered RB/FB, but they seem to be very productive with good physicals and moderate skills.

I'm thinking WR might be another good position…getting catching trained way up there. Not sure how the tactical skills effect receiving….does it make sense to training catching through the roof? Is the receiver that much better?

And possible DE? Sacking, hurrying the QB and shutting down running plays to that end?

What about a shut down CB with high Tackling, Vision and good physicals?

And on a similar note, what are people planning to do with these players afterwards ? Sell/Release or pay their wages ?

I have HB, LB, and CB currently franchised.

I'll probably franchise one OL and DL to round things off. Although I do see the appeal of franchising a QB.

What is the benefit of franchise contracts? Is there a benefit of contracts over skill based wages?

I wouldn't franchise a specific position. That is a waste in my opinion. I would franchise one of 2 player types:

A player who is in the mid 20's and has physicals maxed and maybe in the mid 30's for a skill would be the ideal candidate. The point of the franchise contract is to avoid the huge salary in the LONG run. The reason I would choose this type of player is that the only thing to train is the main skills which will quickly escalate in price. You are trying to avoid the 250k salary.

The other option might be a player who is about 3 to 5 years from retirement and at the 40-44 range and you are intending on maxing the skill soon.

I would never, in retrospect, give a franchise contract to a player who is under 30 in a main skill and younger than 24. Just my preference.

Towards the end of season 6 I gave a franchise contract to my top WR. I then built his catching so that I was saving money on his salary.

By and large I have followed sfniners approach

I no doubt agree that a strong rushing DL can change the course of a game (or at least a few drives), but I wouldn't give him a franchise contract, since it's still a mystery to me what are his most important skills after tackling. I'd rather develop him broadly, all skills up to 40ish.

Fran Contr, personally feels more justifiable in positions that have a more narrow set of skills and where it appears established those skills will make the player better (the obvious being QB or WR).

My first set of franchise contracts run out season 11: 1wr, 2de, 1cb, 1sf.

I basically gave them to my most developed players at the time. And would do it differently if I was to go back although I have saved some money anyway.

I agree with Toni, positions that are likely to reach that threshold quicker (such as RBs, WRs, CBs, QBs etc) are the best candidates. It'll also vary from team to team depending on coaches as well.

Therefore, theoretically, Punters/Kickers are the best candidates for Franchising (if saving money is the sole aim).
However, I'd change my nationality to German and start cheering for Bayern Munich before I ever even dreamed of giving a Franchise contract to a K/P.
