This thread comes via the thought outline of this thread

We introduced manager rank in the guise of what we allow a manager to do so they dont get ahead of theirselves. Its a basic guide that allows for a little learning curve but has no meaning in regards to win/losses or overall tactic building.

I would like to suggest that we add a manager prestige level based on factors of wins/losses.. league standing. These factors would be relative of course to the teams overall strength %s.

the basic principal is this. The prestige is based on How much do players want to play for that manager. Since players have no real individual identities (as of yet) this would be mostly cosmetic but gives an obvious badge to how managers are doing in comparison to managers with teams their own strengths.

The way I see this is prestige is a long term process. Lets say for example we calculate prestige by the amount of *s and lets use the tanking manager since this is kinda where my idea started from (although it works equally well in reverse). Lets say we have a 4th year manager with a team that is 47% in overall strength yet the team is still in the second division where the avg strength of the teams are 41%. His current record is 0-8 so its obvious whats going on. Ask yourself... What player wants to play for a manager like that? Chances are very few I would imagine.. so his prestige would be *. Now lets say that said manager has built the team he wants and now wants to win some games.. He goes 15-0 next season and wins the championship and gets promoted... He's a winning manager now and is first division so his prestige should bump way up right? No... thats where the overall team win/loss record comes in and the fact he beat up opponents he should have. He'll get **.

Now lets take it in reverse... Let say we have a 4th year manager whos been in the top division since year 2.. never won a championship or anything but is a competitive playoff team year to year with a 47% overall strength rating. His reputation would be ****. Lets say year 5 he misses the playoffs for the first time.. and by the end of year 6 he gets relegated due to the influx of high quality teams and his best players end up retiring. So he gets relegated. Does he suck as a manager now? Do players not want to play for him? The answer is not necessarily yes to those questions.. I would say his rep drops to ***.

I think you guys can see where I'm going with this... The prestige is basically a factor of how much players would like to play for that particular manager but its really a badge for other managers to see how well that manager is playing the game. Having a ***** rating is what Landrau would have.. doesnt take a genius to recognize the man is doing his thing. Conversely having a * doesnt mean your team sucks...means you do. doesnt take a genius to figure those guys out either.

is this a cool suggestion? Did I miss anything?

'Cool' isn't the word I'd use ....'intriguing' is the word I'd use.

However, the post gives me 2 initial questions

(1) How would you actually program this ? It looks very 'subjective'.
And subjective things are usually fiendishly difficult to code

(2) I still find myself thinking 'So what ?' .... as in 'that Manager has a poor Prestige Ranking, but so what' ?

Rankings are worrying me a little at the moment .... I just studied the Global Ranking for teams , there are some v.good 1.1 teams ranked 400th or 500th etc .... if the Rankings aren't done well (for any subject), they'll just be ignored.

I like the idea a lot. I think the ELO rating system (used to rate chess players and other thinks) would be really good for this, it could also be good for the ranking system

in answer to #2.... to each his own really. Like i was saying in the post... you cant hide prestige. In the current system if a manager tanked his way to the top and another manager made it to the top "doing it the right way" there would be virtually nothing distinctive in regards to how history views them. I dont think thats right... and if money cant solve the problem then our egos will. A manager who tanks and says they dont care about that is lying IMO. You tank because you want to win.. you want to win because it makes you feel powerful. If another manager looks at your record and doesnt respect it they've struck a major nerve.

And forget that side of it for a second. What about those middle of the road managers who are doing their thing but who's teams just arent built enough yet. But they put up wins.. stay in the first division despite the odds etc. having a nice prestige rating for them and the respect of their fellow managers should count for something.

The global ranks and what I proposed arent the same. The global rankings for one try to be right and exact. this is more of an overall opinion. An opinion based strictly on your teams overall strengths and how they perform in comparison to other teams of a similar strength level.

to #1... I have no clue.
