I would like to simply be able to put a number alongside a player, at his position, and have that be the ratio of series (drives) that he gets.

So if you had -

HB1 - 3
HB2 - 1
HB3 - 0

- then this means for every 4 drives, HB1 does 3 and HB2 does 1. HB3 would only play if HB1 or HB2 was injured. If the present energy system was kept, HB3 would also sub in for HB1 or HB2 if either's energy was below the prescribed limit.

Also, it is important to have a way to ensure your starters are in the game in the 3rd and 4th quarters of big and tight games. So having a way to s e l e c t "Starters Only" for a given situation (score deficit) in given quarters would be great.

While that would be nice, it would be almost impossible with the current engine to code a complex system of substitutions, plus even if it could be possible I doubt we would see it for a few seasons as it relies on other options to be added first

I would like some system like that that way we would have more control on who on the field at each position. But I think this could be done simply by letting us set the sub for each positions.

Although now that I had time to re-read the OP I think his idea is better as thats about the way that NFL teams do it, though they normally do it in plays not full drives. basically using the Cardinals as they have beanie wells do 4 or 5 plays and then the second string comes in for a play or two and they switch off like that throughout the game.

If you think this through you'll realise that this does not really help at all.

One of the major problems is that it is only possible to get the #1 to play the most downs if you run his energy right down. Not only is this bad for obvious reasons, but it makes it impossible to have starters in the game in the 4th quarter when you quite likely most need them.

Yes, I think ideally you'd have a rythem/momentum penalty if players interchange to often, thus disallowing them to "get into the game". "Fresh" players could have a slight skill drop for a few plays maybe.

Well my thing is I would like to have some positions rotate more than others.
Rather than one setting
Split it up so you can control the rotation a bit

Sure. And that's probably ok for positions where you can rotate between other positions like OL (T,G,C) and DL (DE,DT,NT).

But what about RBs? They are not really interchangable with anyone (carrying being VERY important), and this is an important position.

So if you have a superstar #1, but #2 is not so good, then you have a big problem. You either let the #2 have half the snaps, or let the #1 be run into the ground by the 4th quarter.
