I opened a new thread because the other thread is already very clutered.
Pete is asking to give each position average in Height and Weight. I did some research online, found some already researched texts and used them to descrived some positions here, also glued some other researches on height and weight to this post. It's basicaly some research that I did, and used already existing researches online to make this post. Got to begin some place. Here is a researched estimation of all positions on the field. Offensive Quarterbacks Average Height: 6'2"-6'5" Average Weight: 220 to 240 Pounds -Quarterbacks need to be tall to be able to see downfield. Great Quarterbacks like Drew Brees, and Steve McNair were not criticized for their great play, but their lack of ability to see downfield openings due to height. Halfbacks Average Height: 5'10"-5'11" Average Weight: 210 to 230 Pounds -Most Halfbacks Nowadays are around the area of 5'9", and this may be due to the grating of legplates because of excess running. However, big backs like Brandon Jacobs prove statements like this false. No matter how much one person can prove a stereotype wrong, smaller backs are still the majority in the league. Fullbacks Average Height: 5'11"-6'1" Average Weight: 240 to 270 Pounds -Fullbacks are usually former Linebackers or Offensive Lineman with "Fullback Play", therefore most Fullbacks are much taller then the preferred height. Wide Receivers Average Height: 6'0"-6'2" Average Weight: 185 to 225 Pounds -Most Coaches in the NFL are looking for a fast downfield threat with sure hands and a build that is tall enough to catch jump balls (EX: Randy Moss and Calvin Johnson) but because of "Leg-Plate Theory" a tall, fast, and sure handed wide receiver is hard to come by. Tight Ends Average Height:6'3"-6'5" Average Weight: 230 to 250 Pounds -Tights Ends, like Fullbacks, are usually former Offensive Lineman who possess better speeds and catching ability so the height range for Tight Ends is usually higher then the preferred Height. Offensive Linesman Average Height: 6'5"-6'10" Average Weight: 290 to 350+ Pounds Offensive Tackles Average Height: 6'5"-6'10" Average Weight: 300 - 350+ Pounds -Not much of a Conversation here, Tall Tackles are highly valued so that their big sizes can sustain the pocket, contain Defensive Ends, and protect the Quarterback's blind side. (They still need skill mind you). Offensive Guards Average Height: 6'3"-6'6" Average Weight: 290 - 310+ Pounds -Guards also need to have size because Interior Lineman are usually the strongest of the Defensive Core. Offensive Centers Average Height: 6'1"-6'4" Average Weight: 300+ Pounds -In olden days, a Center was a Lineman who needed to have the ability to snap the ball. That's it. The expectations for height were carried. However, since that time, interior defensive lineman have become more valued so Tall Centers have also become somewhat of a demand. ____________________________ Defensive Defensive Line Average Height: 6'2"-6'6" Average Weight: 290 to 350+ Pounds Defensive Ends Average Height: 6'2"-6'6" Average Weight: 250+ Pounds -Defensive Ends were usually the biggest and fastest Lineman on the team. Now (proven by Elvis Dumervil and Dwight Freeney) they are only needed to be fast to be dominant and outrun Tackles to the Quarterback, making the need for skilled Tackles even more valuable. Defensive Tackles Average Height: 6'3"-6'6" Average Weight: 290 - 350 Pounds Interior Lineman have increased in size over the years to collapse the pocket right in the face of Quarterback and possibly predict snap counts to rush the Quarterback. Linebackers Average Height: 6'0"-6'5" Average Weight: 240 to 270 Pounds Outside Linebackers Average Height: 6'2"-6'4" Average Weight: 240 to 270 Pounds -He must be able to hold up the tight end. He can meet the fullback's block. He can blitz effectively against running backs attempting to pass protect him. And he can meet the off tackle play of the fullback or the pulling guard. This position is not as common as it once was. Now they are shifting the line so a defensive lineman is over the tight end and the linebacker is stacked behind. But it is still the same type of athlete. He typically plays on the tight end side and he is bigger and stronger. In the past he has not had to be a key coverage guy. But now if he is stacked behind a defensive lineman and protected, he becomes a key coverage man. Inside Linebackers Average Height: 6'3"-6'5" Average Weight: 240 to 270 Pounds -More Helpful on Goaline Situations more then anything, the size of an Inside Linebacker to stop the Goaline Dive is very crucial. With Inside Linebackers being worked into Zone Schemes nowadays, the ability to jump high and intercept in zone is also very helpful. Middle Linebackers Average Height: 6'0"-6'3" Average Weight: 240 to 270 Pounds The middle linebacker must have an indestructible body. There have been great hitters who damaged themselves in the process. Your middle linebacker can't be in and out of the game or limping off the field. So it takes a powerful physique with bone girth that allows you to give and take punishment. Strong Safeties Average Height: 6'0"-6'2" Average Weight: 200 to 230 Pounds -Strong Safeties are usually more Linebacker then Defensive Back, so Size and Strength matter. Free Safeties Average Height: 5'11"-6'2" Average Weight: 180 to 210 Pounds -A Free Safety is basically a Cornerback who covers whatever is open. Ability is valued over height. Cornerbacks Average Height: 5'11"-6'1" Average Weight: 190 to 205 Pounds -Cornerbacks are usually extremely fast. The ability of makeup speed, breakaway speed, and acceleration are crucial in a shutdown Corner's abilities. Cornerbacks are usually shorter (again, the leg-plate theory), and short Cornerbacks are usually put in uncompromised situations with taller Wide Receivers, however some Cornerbacks have dominated under this situation (DeAngelo Hall V. Chad Johnson). In short ability over size, but a Taller Cornerback with shutdown capabilities will always be of more value. (Antonio Cromartie). ____________________________ Special Teams Punters Average Height: 6’0”-6’2” Average Weight: 220 - 240 Pounds Kickers Average Height: 5’9”-6’1” Average Weight: 220 - 240 Pounds |

Have fun Please do not expect me to do all the work, sorting it and so on. If the list is part of your suggestion, I would expect the job done by you, and I would expect you to post the results of it, quite similar to canonicos post |

Yes, outstanding start!
Makes my little attempt to fill out the list seems totally inadequate, but I did it so here's my first blush: QB: 6'2"-6'5" 220-230 RB: 5'10"-6'2" 210-230 FB: 5'10"-6'2" 240-250 WR: 6'2"-6'4" 200-230 TE: 6'4"-6'7" 250-270 OL: 6'4"-6'8" 285-320 DL: 6'3"-6'5" 270-315 LB: 6'2"-6'4" 230-250 DB: 5'11"-6'2" 190-210 Obviously these could (and maybe should) be broken down by position better. Scouts look for different sizes in a DT vs a DE for example. One point I'd like to make is for people to remember that we are talking about (at least in my mind) 'averages', 'ideals', 'prototypical-size', 'what-scouts-look-for', stuff along those lines and not the actual H&W of any particular player no matter how successful they have been. While we all agree scouts can get it wrong and players of many sizes have been successful, we should also all be able to agree that when it comes to draft day an NFL prospect's size is evaluated and based on how close to these ideals the prospect actually measures can drastically effect their draft stock. |

Agree, this is just average height and weight at a certain position. Does not mean that a 7'00" ft 289 lbs QB couldn't be successfull. Even if we all agree that the Average height and weight is shorter and light weighted. sneaky_minotaur wrote:While we all agree scouts can get it wrong and players of many sizes have been successful, we should also all be able to agree that when it comes to draft day an NFL prospect's size is evaluated and based on how close to these ideals the prospect actually measures can drastically effect their draft stock.

First column is max height in ft and inches then cms followed by weight. Next four are the mins and the last three the averages. Check them out I think you will find them to be very accurate QB Max Ft6 in 7 201cms 250 lbs Min 5 11 180 197 Ave 6 3 191 225 FB 6 3 191 277 5 7 175 238 6 0 184 251 RB 6 4 193 264 5 6 168 180 5 11 180 217 WR 6 6 198 236 5 5 165 153 6 1 184 202 TE 6 8 203 283 6 0 183 225 6 4 194 254 OL 6 9 206 360 6 0 183 225 6 4 194 307 DL 6 8 203 364 5 11 180 244 6 3 192 294 LB 6 5 196 274 5 10 178 220 6 1 188 244 CB 6 4 193 221 5 8 173 165 5 11 181 193 SF 6 4 193 232 5 8 173 183 6 0 183 207 K 6 4 193 250 5 8 173 177 6 0 183 203 P 6 5 196 263 5 11 180 174 6 2 188 214 KR 6 6 198 236 5 5 165 153 6 1 184 202 G 6 3 191 221 5 9 175 182 5 11 181 200 Last edited on 2012-09-17 22:42:11 by bwadders76 |

Have fun I was able to get that data into a spreadsheet but cannot work out how to upload it to my webspace and get the link to work. I might try again tomorrow. Anyway, here's the data - CB - 5'8" - 6'3" avg = 5'11", 169lb - 213lb avg = 190lb SF - 5'8" - 6'5" avg = 6'0", 178lb - 232lb avg = 207lb LB - 5'10" - 6'6" avg = 6'2", 205lb - 310lb avg = 240lb DE - 5'11" - 6'7" avg = 6'3", 230lb - 328lb avg = 265lb DT - 5'11" - 6'7" avg = 6'2", 254lb - 365lb avg = 300lb K - 5'10" - 6'5" avg = 6'0", 175lb - 250lb avg = 201lb P - 5'11" - 6'6" avg = 6'2", 175lb - 265lb avg = 215lb QB - 5'11" - 6'6" avg = 6'3", 196lb - 285lb avg = 223lb RB - 5'6" - 6'4" avg = 5'11", 177lb - 275lb avg = 225lb WR - 5'7" - 6'8" avg = 6'2", 165lb - 319lb avg = 212lb So no OL, FB or TE - I guess LB would do for FB/TE and DT for OL. PS - avg is actually the player in the middle of the list. So if there were 180 players then the 90th was the "avg". Last edited on 2012-09-17 23:36:48 by hosh13 |
