the other option is to take away the game setting/playbook option to choose left/right centre completely and introduce a full position depth chart...

Then again I have to deal with possible exploits, I fear..not to forget the "nightmare" for newbees when they do the initial setup

Not really too much of a nightmare - the defaults are ok.

But you need to go beyond defaults to have a polished outfit!

So long as this sort of a game has decent defaults, then everything after that is fine imo.

Depth/complexity is VERY important to keep people around.

if you have no control over which direction plays will go then there is no bonus to putting all your best players on 1 side. the positions that need adding to the DC really are LDE, RDE, LOLB, ROLB, RT, RG, LG, LT the rest are fine as they are with the system you run already making it not that much to add or change just a bit.

I think if you have left/right for OT/DE/LB then these need to be specific positions with OOPP.

no because that would require new coaches and massive changes to the coaching setup

depends where he lines up

there has to be a single/left/right/strong/weak Runningbackcoach if he goes in motion there has to be a motion coach and if he sets up as a Wr there need to be a split Coach
