I played a scrimmage yesterday and something odd happened. I was testing SG2 Pass vs. Dime coverage, and it turned out my TEs had way better games than my WRs,:
WRs caught 13 for 96 (7.4 YPC) und 0 BrcTack TEs caught 27 für 265 (9.8 YPC) und 16 BrcTack Which of course makes a bit sense: You would figure the strong TEs would be able to physically dominate the 3rd and 4th CBs in the dime, while the Outside WRs would be blanketed by the two most talented CBs. Turns out, the missed tackles on the D were all on the #1 und #2 CB! And going through the gamelog, there were consistently inner passes to a TE, a missed tackle by the top CB to this side, and then a clean up tackle by the #3 or #4 CB. So this raises two questions: - Does a missed tackle "slow down" a ball carrier? (This would explain, why weaker #3 and #4 CBs can make tackles that seconds eralier were missed by stronger and more talented #1 and #2 CBs) - Where do the CBs line up in the Dime? How can the #1 and #2 CBs consistently be the first to attempt tackles on inner passes to TEs, when they're actually supposed to be covering the outside WRs? All four CBs have speed 48+, so it's not like the #3 and #4 are just physically to slow to get to the TE first. Does anyone have a clue how the Dime is really setup on the field? |

Maybe it's not how they're lined up, but perhaps their assignment?
For example, I have never read anywhere if the backs are playing man or zone. I would have imagined man but who knows |

Well the reason I brought up the zone thing would be that if the number 1 and 2 corners were in almost a cover 2 and the TE's were going to the outside, that could be the reason they're being tackled... but you're right, doesn't make much sense if the passes are over the middle.

if you take the graphic of the Dime in the manual seriously, could it be that the outside CBs defend zones at the line of scrimmage, while CBs 3-4 drop to cover deeper areas? nickel- and dime-CBs seem to be lined up slighty deeper than their colleagues on the outside:

I think the CBs 3 and 4 are more like "safeties" for CB 1 and 2. Pete said, that the engine measures the distances between defenders and receivers. The CBs 1 and 2 have mostly better Speed and positioning and are closer to the LOS and the result is, that this CBs face the receiver earlier.
