Kirky 44's Make Ze Big Noise at Kirky High

Written by: Monsieur Étienne “Le Spiral Baguette” Touché-Lafumble

Bonjour, I am just a French tourist, you know, walking in ze United States, and suddenly I am interviewed outside Kirky High after zis League match sponsored by Ash Cloud Airlines. Ze experts, zey predicted a close game for both teams, but mon dieu, on ze field it became a loud Scottish-style accordion of football from Kirky 44's against Girona Dragons 1714, with 135,008 visitors making ze stadium feel like ze airport during a cheese festival.

Kirky 44's began with much confidence after receiving ze ball. Even when Drew McNair had ze early sprained ankle moment, Archie Crichton stepped in and did not look, how you say, frightened by ze dragons. Ze first big celebration came when Hugh MacLaine caught a short pass near ze goal line for a touchdown, and Lyle MacGillivray followed with ze good PAT. Later in ze opening quarter, Kirky marched again with steady passes to Craig Matheson and strong running by Carmichael MacCallum, before Hugh MacLaine made another tiny but tasty touchdown catch, again followed by ze good PAT.

Girona Dragons 1714 tried to answer with Roger Pujol, Feliu Carreras, Magi Pujol and Jaume Riera moving ze ball in pieces, but Kirky’s defense kept biting like a terrier in a bakery. Terence Taase, Gonzalo Lorenzo and Kirk MacAlister were active, and Girona had to punt often. Kirky also had injury drama: McNair went out, came back, went out again, and came back again, like a tourist who cannot decide if ze museum is open.

In ze second quarter, Kirky continued to make long, patient drives. Archie Crichton found Hugh MacLaine for another goal-line touchdown catch, with MacGillivray adding ze PAT. Then Crichton found Dylan Elric on a short pass for another touchdown, and ze PAT was good as well. Girona’s Roger Pujol was hit by sacks from Gonzalo Lorenzo and Terence Taase, which made ze Dragons’ offense look like it had lost ze map to ze Louvre.

There was also a turnover on downs when Kirky went for it and could not complete ze pass to Dylan Elric. Girona took over, but could not transform ze cadeau into something grand. Before halftime, Drew McNair returned and guided another long Kirky possession, finishing with Lyle MacGillivray making a short field goal. It was not just power, it was patience, like waiting for proper café in America.

After halftime, Girona Dragons 1714 showed real pride. Roger Pujol led a very nice drive with completions to Feliu Carreras, Magi Pujol and Mateu Alberti, plus runs by Jaume Riera and Toni Vidal. Enric Gil made a field goal to get Girona on ze board. Soon after, a very important turnover arrived: Hendrie Mar fumbled for Kirky, and Joan Barbera recovered for Girona. Ze return did not go anywhere, but ze possession gave ze Dragons life.

Girona used zat chance well. Roger Pujol kept throwing, Toni Vidal ran with courage, and Magi Pujol caught a short touchdown pass. Enric Gil added ze PAT. For a moment, ze Dragons breathed fire again, and I said, “Ah oui, now maybe ze prediction of close game, she comes back?” But Kirky answered like a team ordering another giant soda.

Drew McNair led Kirky downfield with sharp passes to Dylan Elric and Donald John Leask. Hendrie Mar, who had earlier lost ze ball, found redemption with a short touchdown run. Lyle MacGillivray made ze PAT, and ze home crowd became very, very noisy. It was ze kind of noise where I could not hear my own accent, which is serious.

In ze fourth quarter, Girona did not surrender. Roger Pujol moved ze Dragons with repeated throws to Feliu Carreras and Magi Pujol, plus a hard run by Toni Vidal. Jaume Riera finished a goal-line drive with a touchdown run, and Enric Gil made ze PAT. But Kirky responded by slowing ze game, moving chains, and using Carmichael MacCallum, Campbell Petrie, Hendrie Mar, Drew McNair and Grant MacDonnell to keep control.

One of ze finest special-teams moments came when Carmichael MacCallum returned a Girona punt for a big gain after several missed tackles. It gave Kirky excellent field position, and later Campbell Petrie finished ze drive with a short touchdown run. MacGillivray added ze PAT once more. Girona still fought in ze final moments, with Pujol completing passes to Magi Pujol and Feliu Carreras, but a late sack by Michael MacLaine helped close ze evening.

So, mes amis, it was a night of touchdowns, good PATs, field goals, sacks, injuries, one fumble recovery by Joan Barbera, and one turnover on downs. Kirky 44's were sharper, deeper, and more relentless, while Girona Dragons 1714 showed spirit but could not keep pace for all four quarters.

Final score: Girona Dragons 1714 17 - Kirky 44's 45.
