Girona Dragons 1714 Lift the Supercup at Leopards Arena

We came into Leopards Arena as the away team in a Supercup match with 143326 visitors in the building, and we played with the confidence of a team that expected to handle the moment. Experts had predicted a possible away win, and our players showed why that belief was justified.

Our opening drive set the tone. Roger Pujol kept finding Feliu Carreras and Magi Pujol, Quim Pujol powered through the right side, and Feliu finished the march with a touchdown catch near the goal line. On our next major possession, Jaume Riera ran behind strong blocking and finished the drive with a touchdown run. That was the identity we wanted: efficient passing, physical running, and no panic.

Leverkusen Leopards answered with Coleman Mann moving the ball well to Ahmad Schuhmacher, Zoran Cvejić, Kurt Hartmann, and Hans-Theo Schuster, with Schuster producing a touchdown catch. Later, Lozan Braykov gave them two tough touchdown runs, and their offense made us defend every blade of grass. I respect that, but we never lost belief in our plan.

Our second-quarter response was exactly what a championship team needs. Roger Pujol drove us downfield again, Feliu Carreras stayed reliable, and the touchdown pass to Carreras showed our timing and trust. Even when Leverkusen created momentum after halftime with a field goal, a safety, and a touchdown set up by Hartwig Thomas intercepting Roger Pujol and returning it deep into our territory, we stayed composed.

The only major turnover was that interception by Hartwig Thomas; there were no fumbles deciding the game. We owned our mistake, corrected our protection and reads, and answered like men. Our defense also made important plays: Arnau Colomer, Cesc Barba, Genis Soler, Maurice Cuellar, Oriol Quintana, and Miquel Garcia all had moments that forced Leverkusen into difficult downs.

The fourth quarter belonged to our resilience. Roger Pujol led the offense from deep field position, Magi Pujol and Feliu Carreras moved the chains, and Carreras delivered a touchdown catch from distance. Then, with pressure at its highest, Pujol found Carreras again near the goal line for the decisive touchdown. Enric Gil was calm on his kicks, and Jaume Riera secured the final first down to let us finish the job.

At Leopards Arena, in front of 143326 visitors, our Leverkusen Leopards gave everything in a Supercup battle that demanded toughness from the first snap to the final whistle. Girona Dragons 1714 were as dangerous as advertised, and we knew the experts saw a possible away-team win, but our locker room never backed away from the challenge.

Girona started fast with Roger Pujol distributing the ball to Feliu Carreras and Magi Pujol, and they finished early drives through a Carreras touchdown catch and a Jaume Riera touchdown run. We had some injury interruptions with Alberto Becker, Severin Schulze, Hartwig Thomas, Tino Keller, Kurt Hartmann, and Pierre Friedrich all appearing in the game notes, but our sideline kept responding.

Our offense found rhythm behind Coleman Mann. Hans-Theo Schuster finished a sharp drive with a touchdown catch, and Lozan Braykov gave us the physical edge we needed with two touchdown runs. Braykov’s work between the tackles and on the edge was exactly the kind of effort that keeps a team alive in a title game.

In the third quarter, we built pressure with a Gottlieb Neumann field goal, then Hartwig Thomas made one of the game’s biggest defensive plays by intercepting Roger Pujol and returning the ball deep into Girona territory. Iskandar Ibraheem took advantage of that short field and found Knud Pfeiffer for a touchdown. There were no fumbles, and that interception was the turnover that swung momentum in our direction for a long stretch.

Defensively, we had impact plays from Harald Beck, Chatchalerm Khadpo, Pau Fuentes, Gino Ness, Wenzel Müller, Severin Schulze, and others. The safety created by pressure near the Girona goal line was a statement play, and it showed the aggression we want from this defense.

The difference came late. Girona answered with two fourth-quarter touchdown passes to Feliu Carreras, and they executed cleanly when the pressure was at its highest. We had a final possession with time to move, and Iskandar Ibraheem found Zoran Cvejić and Kurt Hartmann, but we could not extend the drive when we needed one more conversion.

I am disappointed, but I am not discouraged.
