Hello folks and welcome to a new edition of the mint fresh Thunder Outsiders magazine. Today we have the much anticipated round 1 review of Draft 34.

(EDITOR'S NOTE: we are only focusing on Thunder 1 here as there are too many bots participating in Thunder 2)

The dust has settled and we can now survey what has been left on the board. More importantly we can also see what has been taken. We went straight to work this morning and entered all the picks into our Draft Value Ranking algorithm. After some rumbling and shaking it spat out a sheet of data.

And my fellow managers, the results are shocking to say the least! Only 8 teams received a positive grade! Read on to see what we calculated in order to arrive at this horror show!

We simply used the following formula:

[Draft Order] - [Player Ranking] = Draft Value Ranking

This is very theoretical of course so let's jump straight in and get our hands dirty. As we mentioned up top, here at Football Outsiders, we don't shy away from giving our opinion. So let's start with what we consider to be pick of the night. In fact, it's so bad it's possibly the worst pick of all time!

Spitting LLamas had draft order 4. A very high pick. They picked however P Aberlardo Blanco who was the 91st draft player . The formula therefore becomes:

4 - 91 = -87

There are 96 players in the draft and the highest draft order is 1 so the worst score you can achieve is

1 - 96 = -95

Now you see why we can call Llamas pick almost the worst pick of all time.

OK, now we got that nasty business out of the way you are of course immediately wondering who had the best value. Now before we start we have to say that to get above average value from your pick you need to be lucky. The lower you are in the order the more luck you need as you need more managers to pass up this player and pick a worst player.

However you still have to make the pick so credit where credit is due here. It really should come as no surprise that best value was achieved Chesterton Cheese who picked the no2 ranked player FB Faith Jaber . The second last team got the second best rated player. Go figure! The highest value score therefore becomes:

31 - 2 = +29

This is almost the best value you can get so in one draft we are seeing two extremes.

As mentioned the overall performance was atrocious with 24 teams getting a value ranking that was lower than 0 (0 means you picked a player with a rank that is equal to your draft order).

So for completeness sake I will list the top 5 and the bottom 5 of the first round:

TOP 5
+29 Chesterton Cheese
+20 Norfolk Dumplings
+18 Cougars
+10 Istanbul Sultans
+ 8 Kokomo Mantis

BOTTOM 5
-57 Smoke & Mirrors
-61 Barossa Bulldogs
-61 Granville Skunks
-79 Bubble Bobble (BOT) - YES!
-87 Spitting Llamas

Tomorrow we will be back to review round 2 of this draft. If you do not agree with my analysis then I first want to say Thank You for having an opinion an secondly, leave a comment with your view!

Happy 2nd round planning to you,
your intrepid reporter Cheesehead

Great work

But if you have the draft order ranking algorithm how come you didn’t do better

Poor cheesehead couldn't score any better than a 0! (The curse of picking first)

Glad I got a great player drafting so late. I always thought I may not be as bad at this game as I think I am!

And well done Dumplings for grabbing a good player late in the draft too!

If it wasn't for the fact that I already have the best FB in Thunder (as per the end of season awards) I might have drafted him first

Overall, not a big draft this season.

Anyone agree?

Agree!

Great Cheesehead - if you remeber I once did something like that too but based on my own position rankings. Remember a heated exchange with thomastem about how I rank
Was a bit easier and (maybe) more fair because with your system you take not into consideration that eg OL is always very low also with my algorithm just because SPE and AGI are not there. And I asume if your biggest need is QB it could be smart to pick the best QB even if there are some other "better" prospects still available from positions already stacked with your team.

But all in all thanks for your time!!

Agreed not a great one at first glance, obviusly without knowing caps we can't properly assess it. In truth the draft isn't that important anymore since the YA changes and Training changes, better players come out of YA than draft now.

Which has completely changed the way i rank draft, now i want high EXP and take a flyer on caps as everything out of my YA has great physicals nowadays.

Indeed, indeed. I actually doubled weights for INT and TW in my ranking this year for that reason. I still do love the Draft for the drama of it. Also you can get pretty good bargains nowadays when people dump all their unwanted draft players on the TM. Excellent strategy for starting teams!

Indeed it is not fair and that's the point, as the sub header says: "Subjective Analysis & Random Statistics"

It's meant to stir up conversations and debate. RZA is more fun that way. Of course we don't thomastem level of debate, just a decent chat over a cup of coffee And my posts will always be a bit tongue in cheek, not meant to be taken too seriously.
