You can fire such player at the start of the season. Otherwise you have to show some respect to those veterans, and you can therefore not fire them midseason. It is the way it is, and I do not like to change this.

To clarify, for the argument "but I bought ..." - yes, then it is something in the managers responsibility. The special rule to allow retiring players to be fired before season is starting is in place, since you cannot know what season rollover is offering.
