Someone once said (i don't know who it was):"I absolutely hate what you are saying. But i am gonna fight for your right to say it." That should be the way in my opinion. |

It's often wrongly attributed to Voltaire but apparently it was Evelyn Beatrice Hall who said it.

The media is making this out to be a freedom of speech against terrorism when really I think this should be an issue about where to draw the line when someone wants the freedom to incite others and spew hatred.
This kind of shit wouldn't fly in the US. Any magazine or publication in the US that drew a picture of Jesus butt f#cking God the father, with the holy spirit in Jesus' butt would prolly get killed too. I live in Ireland and the US but lately have spent more time in America. People here honor free speech but recognize you don't use it to yell 'fire' you don't use it to spread hate, and you don't use it to threaten the lives or health if others. If someone wanted to start a magazine in the US that published pictures of black people saying yes a Masser and getting raped by white slave owners, with captions like "stupid nigger" I'm pretty sure we'd have a tragedy like we did in France. Just saying.

That only proves that the United States like they are today has a lot of fundamentalist people as well, with George W. Bush they even had a fundamentalist reborn christian as a president. A picture, whatever it is showing, can NEVER be a justification to harm another person in any way, i am not even speaking of killing somebody here. If it excesses the right for freedom of speech, then there is the legal way to ban it and take actions against the person who published it. By the way, in the 1960's or 70's in Germany there was a very famous verdict about a cartoon, it showed the german minister of the interior butt-fucking a pig. The highest german court ruled that it was satiric and within the rights for freedom of speech. Aquashift wrote:

That is actually true, but i don't agree that the Charlie Hebdo pictures did that. Btw. they did covers and stories about Jesus and God as well. A satiric view on religion should not be forbidden in my opinion. Last edited on 2015-01-14 07:16:10 by DonWilliam |
